Kandle Biography

In 2010, she met with her collaborator and co-producer Sam Goldberg Jr. (Broken Social Scene, Yardlets) after he approached her to shoot press photos for one of the projects he had in his music. She agreed to the condition that he perform on a few of the songs she recorded. Kandle relocated to Montreal in order to be nearer to Goldberg Jr., and they soon formed The Krooks, featuring Jason Kent (The Dears, Sunfields) on bass and vocals, David Deias on drums and Felix Dyotte and Tim Fletcher (The Stills) on keyboards and guitars. The Krooks became Kandle’s backup band.

In the year 2017 Kandle signed with an alternative record label based in Toronto called Sleepless Records and began recording her second full-length album called Holy Smoke. She joined forces together with Sam Goldberg (Broken Social Scene), Devon Portielje (Half Moon Run), Graham Walsh (Holy Fuck) and producer John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Kurt Vile, Phosphorescent) and Alex Bonenfant (July Talk, Crystal Castles) to create her most powerful album ever, tackling sexual violence and the abuse of power and travel, emotional trauma and hurt with vulnerability and strength. The debut song “When My Body Breaks” was released in January 2018 with Peter Dreimanis of label mates July Talk and has been nominated for the 2018 JUNO Award for the Engineer of the Year (Jason Dufour).

Produced by Rendall and performed by some of Kandle’s closest collaborators (Louise Burns, Kendel Carson Debra Jean, Creelman, Dave Genn, Nik Pesur) , the new album exudes confidence, sensuality and maturity only gained by spending an entire life in music. After a few short days of pre-production, “we cut each track and watched the magic of the players unfold.” says Rendall. “We recorded everything with an old-school mentality: as few microphones as possible and plenty of room tone. Each song gained its own personality, warts and all.”

While the beginnings of the recording took place long before the days of social distancing and self-isolation, how it began was not too different. “Kandle already had most of the songs written and roughly demoed well before we got in the studio,” says London-based-producer Michael Rendall. “We had been working back and forth on [songs] vía iMessage towards the end of 2019.”

After performing the EP throughout North America and Europe, Kandle returned to the studio together with Goldberg as well as her father on duties as a producer. The album that resulted was a huge success, the album In Flames, released on March 4, 2014, on the label from Quebec called Dare to Care Records. The video for the album’s first track “Not Up To Me” was directed by Natalie Rae Robison, featuring an emotional tale based on the challenges of anorexia and depression. It was nominated to win an Juno Award and won the Prism Prize Audience Award in 2015. Kandle performed extensively across North America and Europe to promote In Flames, sharing the stage with artists like Lou Doillon and Coeur de pirate, and performing in CMJ, Osheaga, Pop Montreal and M for Montreal.
