Justin Holl (born January 30 1992) is an American professional defenseman in ice hockey who is now playing in the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted into the second-round, 54th overall with the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
As he did not sign an entry-level deal for the Blackhawks, Holl was a free agent when he had signed the AHL deal for Toronto Marlies in 2015. Toronto Marlies in 2015. The following year two days later, on the second of July Holl was signed to the NHL Entry-level deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team was named the Marlies for the 2016-17 season. Holl continued to succeed in the AHL, setting a new career-high in points and assists during the regular season. During the 2018 Calder Cup playoffs, he recorded 5 points in 20 games to help the Marlies win their first Calder Cup in franchise history.
During the 2017–18 season, Holl was selected for the 2018 AHL All-Star Game in Utica, New York. He was called up to the NHL on an emergency basis on January 31, 2018, to replace an ill Ron Hainsey. He made his NHL debut that night in a game against the New York Islanders. During this game, he scored his first NHL goal to help the Leafs win 5–0. It marked the first time since 1978 that a Maple Leafs defenseman scored in his NHL debut. On February 1, in a game against the New York Rangers, Holl scored his second NHL goal to become the first Maple Leafs defenseman to score two goals in his first two games. As well, he became only the sixth defenseman in NHL history to score in each of his first two games.
In his sophomore year Holl’s role with the Gophers shifted from defence to offense at times throughout the season. After scoring seven points and three goals the team was awarded an award that was named the Gophers the Dr. V. George Nagobads Unsung Hero. The following time, Holl helped the Gophers to qualify for their 2014 NCAA Frozen Four where he scored his first goal of the season during the season, scoring in .06 seconds remaining in the game. They defeat North Dakota 2-1. Following his senior year, Holl split his time in the 2014-2015 season between Chicago’s affiliates of the minor leagues. Indy Fuel of the ECHL, Indy Fuel of the ECHL and the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Holl was a student at Minnetonka High School from 2007 until 2010. When he was in his final year of Minnetonka High School, Holl was named co-captain along with Max Gardiner and made the honor roll. On the 20th of November 2009, he signed a commitment contract in partnership with Minnesota’s Minnesota Golden Gophers at the University of Minnesota. After this season Holl received a nomination for Minnesota Mr. Hockey, an award presented to the top senior hockey player in Minnesota.
Holl was chosen to the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round, 54th overall at the time of the NHL Entry Draft; however Holl remained committed to Minnesota’s University of Minnesota. While at the University of Minnesota, Holl majored in Finance at the Carlson School of Management. In his debut season playing for the Gophers He participated in 25 games, scoring seven points, which included one goal. Following his freshman season He was selected to the Team America’s National Junior Evaluation Camp in August.
On July 3, 2018, Holl signed a two-year, $1.35 million contract extension with the Maple Leafs. He attended the Leafs’ training camp prior to the 2018–19 season and was named to the opening night roster. He was a healthy scratch for the Leafs’ first 12 games of the season, playing in his first game on November 1 against the Dallas Stars. As a result of injuries and illnesses, Holl replaced Igor Ozhiganov in the Leafs lineup and recorded his first career assist in a 7–6 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on March 15, 2019.
