Nakano was a part of Square (now Square Enix) in the year 1995. He composed four pieces for the Video game Front Mission: Gun Hazard that featured composers Nobuo Uematsu Yasunori Mitsuda, as well as Masashi Hamauzu. His first solo venture resulted from Satellaview’s Treasure Conflix the same year. in 1996 Nakano collaborated with a number of composers from Square to compose the music for the video game Tobal No. 1. He composed three pieces. Hamauzu and Nakano met after they worked in Front Mission: Gun Hazard and Tobal No. 1 and have since collaborated on a variety of titles. in 1997 Nakano was the synthesizer programmer on the score for Front Mission: Alternative. Nakano composed the music for the only Japanese adventure title Another Mind, which he was given two months to finish. The score he composed for the 1999 game Threads of Fate (known as “Dewprism” in Japan) brought him recognition across the world.

Back at Square Enix, he created the music for Musashi: Samurai Legend with Hamauzu and the duo Wavelink Zeal (Takayuki and Yuki Iwai) in 2004. In 2006, Nakano created seven tracks for the Xbox 360 game Project Sylpheed, which also featured several other composers. Later the same year, he arranged four pieces from the Mana series for Dawn of Mana (known as “Seiken Densetsu 4” in Japan). He was also selected to arrange half of Final Fantasy IV’ s Nintendo DS remake under the supervision of Uematsu, and composed the soundtrack to its 2008 sequel, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. Nakano’s last projects for Square Enix before leaving were the soundtracks to Fullmetal Alchemist: Prince of the Dawn and Daughter of the Dusk.

Nakano is most well-known for creating ambient music using percussive, timbral, as well as rhythmic elements. Based on an interview conducted for the web site RocketBaby.net, Nakano was composing music that focused on instruments’ sound and acoustics prior to 1995. After this point, he slowly concentrated on melodies and harmony that are crucial to the whole of music. Following his move to Square the band, he began focusing on timbre and rhythm that he incorporated into titles such as Front Mission: Gun Hazard, Treasure Conflix, and Tobal No. 1. The music from Threads of Fate has diverse styles, including jazz, ambient and Spanish music. The tracks are classified as “mellow” and “upbeat”. In Final Fantasy X, Nakano was responsible for the majority of the ambient-inspired compositions that included the percussion, timbre and rhythm. Nakano declared in the initial music’s liner notes the intention to make music that had an “vibrant and dynamic feel” which entwined his years of experience in game music.
