The first issue American Affairs was released February 21 a month following Trump’s inauguration. It was wanted to be the inaugural of four issues in 2017. In an interview prior to its publication, Krein stated he planned to feature a dozen contributors, and for each issue to contain around 10 essays. The issue’s first issue contained articles that focused on “the failure of standard conservative ideology,” nationalists as well as fusionism and Free Market Theory. The issue was met with mixed reviews.

Krein was born at Eureka, South Dakota, the son of Gary Krein and Nancy Krein. He has a sister. His graduation from Eureka High School in 2004. He graduated in 2008 from Harvard College, where he learned about political philosophy with Harvey Mansfield.

Krein began his career in finance and was employed by Bank of America and the Blackstone Group. In his time in the presidential race of 2016 U.S. presidential election, Krein was employed by an investment firm based in Boston in addition to serving as a blogger and administrator for a pro-Trump website. The blog, dubbed The Journal for American Greatness, was supposedly created to help Trump because his views were based on sound political principles. The owners of the blog eventually decided to take off the site, saying it was an inside joke and weren’t prepared for such a massive number of readers. Its success led to Krein leaving his day job and launch an official publication called American Affairs, a quarterly journal that aimed at supporting Trump in an academic point of view He said it was an attempt “to give the Trump movement some intellectual heft.” A year later the publication was shut down, however Krein abruptly resigned the support he had given to Trump and wrote that he regretted prior backing of the president.

In an interview with Slate, Krein further explained how he had rationalized his public support for Trump prior to the Charlottesville rally. Krein stated that he did not feel Trump was legitimately racist. He told Slate, “I didn’t think the racist stuff was real. I thought it was media provocation. And that the economic or other stuff—that’s what he really cared about, and we are not electing a Pope, we are electing a president. If he gets even a couple things done, it’s good for the country, and by the way good for everybody.”
