The same time she was expanding to more experimental territories which culminated with the publication of Long Time Relationship, a collection of drawings and prints. in 2004, Doucet released her first book in French her illustrated journal (Journal) that chronicles one year of her life and in 2006, an autobiography based on words and phrases that were taken from newspapers and magazines (J as Je). In the spring of 2006, she had her debut solo show of prints, titled the souvenir of Melek in the B-312 gallery in Montreal. The month of December 2007 was when Drawn & Quarterly published 365 Days A Diary of Julie Doucet, in which she wrote about her life for a whole year, beginning in the second quarter of 2002.
. . . I wish my work would be recognized by a larger crowd of people as more art than be stuck with the cartoonist label for the rest of my life. That’s what’s killing me about a lot of those comics guys. Dan Clowes is mostly a writer, a great artist, and has tried different things, But a lot of those guys, their drawing style never changes—the content neither—and it seems it never will. I just don’t understand that, how you can spend fifty years of your artist life doing the same thing over and over again.
She had a book of poetry published by L’Oie de Cravan in 2006, À l’école de l’amour. Her current artwork consists of linocuts, collage and papier-mache sculptures. In 2007, Doucet designed the cover for the Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women.
Doucet was first released through Drawn & Quarterly in January 1991, as a regular size comic series that was also titled Dirty Plotte. Soon after, she relocated from New Jersey to New York. Even though she moved to Seattle next year however, memories of her time of New York formed the basis of the critically-acclaimed My New York Diary (many stories were adapted in Dirty Plotte). She relocated between Seattle and then Berlin in 1995, and then coming back in Montreal after 1998. In Berlin she was a part of an e-book titled Ciboire de criss published by L’Association in Paris which was her first novel in French. When she returned to Montreal she launched the 12th and final edition of her comic Dirty Plotte before embarking on a brief break from comics.
