In 1987 in 1987, he was a member of his first membership in the French Communist Party and, soon after was appointed to the CGT Federal Office for Rail workers. In 1997 the year he was appointed to the office of the confederation. At this year’s 46th congress of CGT between January and February 1999, he was succeeded by Louis Viannet as the head of the confederation. He also quit his national duties in the Communist Party, to fight the notion that unions are the driving force behind the party.

In the Fall strikes of 1986, he was the initial push for the beginning of the strike and is believed to have pushed the idea of coordinated strikes that the unions had been unwilling to accept. He advocated the integration of non- unionist strikers into the process, which was mostly reserved to general gatherings of workers on their local levels (a procedure that was repeated in the massive 1995 strike). At the time, he was believed to be one of the major characters of the strike, and an emblem of the revival and renewal of the CGT.

Bernard Thibault, born in 1959, was Secretary of the Confederation Generale du Travail (CGT) between 1999 until 2013 as which is a French workers union. He is a representative of the moderate wing of the CGT in contrast to its more extreme wing found in Marseilles the trade union.

At age 15 He was enrolled in the SNCF apprenticeship center in Noisy-le-Sec and left in 1976, having earned a diploma for general mechanics. He was later employed to work at the SNCF yard in Paris-la-Villette. In 1977 He was a member of the Confederation generale du travail, and was assigned the charge of Union’s “Young workers commission”. In the year 1980, he took over as Secretary of the Union in the train yard. He later appointed as secretary for the CGT for all rail workers on in the Eastern Paris railroad network.

However, Thibault’s efforts to push the CGT towards a more reformist stance, as witnessed for instance during the strikes of November 2007, was met with resistance within the leadership of the union, which for example did not give a voting directive to its members for the 2005 referendum on the European Constitution.
