In the 1999 season of athletics, Golding won the national title in 20.20 seconds (wind assisted) and then continued to improve his performance by winning several high-profile world Grand Prix events. It was the Crystal Grand Prix is considered to be one of Golding’s greatest performance; he took the 200m race against an elite field in 20.23 seconds, and was able to overcome the strong wind of -1.1 meters per second. With no headwind, Golding could be the only British sprinter to cross the 20 second mark that is believed to be the standard of a true international athlete (John Regis has the UK record with 19.87 second). Golding finished 7th in the finals at the 1999 World Championships in Seville, and ended the year at ninth globally.
Golding’s last major competition was in 2003, where he represented Great Britain at the Paris World Championships. Three years later, he was forced to retire prematurely, due to persistent injuries.
Golding is also an accomplished pianist and enjoys playing golf and tennis. On 18 July 2012, Golding graduated from Middlesex University with First Class Honours for Sports and Exercise Science with Teaching & Coaching. Julian is now a qualified P.E teacher working at St Mary Magdalene’s Secondary Phase and he is also Head of Year 9. (2016).
In 1998, at the European Athletics Championships, Golding was the most likely to take home an Olympic gold medal over 200m. After putting up a series of speedy speeds and winning both the heats and semi-finals and achieving his goal, he went on to claim his very first senior major championship. In the 200-meter final, but he was defeated by his teammate Dougie Walker. Walker was awarded the bronze medal instead.

Golding was born in Harlesden, North West London. He attended St Augustine’s Church of England High School in Kilburn the area, he was keen on playing every sport before deciding to take up the sport of athletics with a focus in 1991. He was spotted by the former Olympic track athlete Mike McFarlane, after finishing second in the Westminster Schools Athletics Competition.
The same year, the team represented England and was awarded two gold medals, in the 200 meters and 4 x 100m relay in the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In the 200 metres , he ran a personal-best time in the distance of 20.34 seconds at the quarter-final stage. The 4×100 meters sprint relay team, they recorded the record at 38.20 seconds, which is a Commonwealth Games record that still is in use in the present. He also assisted the Great British 4 x 100-metre relay team win the 1998 IAAF World Cup and European Cup in addition to taking part in the final leg of the 1997 World Championships in Athens, where Britain was awarded bronze.
He was part of Team GB’s 4 x 100-metre relay team at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, but the team were disqualified in the first round. He failed to qualify for his preferred event, due to illness at the Olympic Trials.
