After taking a five-year hiatus from boxing, Tolppola returned to the boxing ring on the 9th of May 2014. He would record three consecutive wins via a an unanimous decision before taking on unbeaten Matias Laitinen to win the vacant Finnish Welterweight title on May 23rd, 2015. Tolppola was victorious in a ten-round unanimous decision, however in September, the result became a no- contest following his failure to pass a drug test that tested the use for hydrochlorothiazide (a diuretic used to aid in the loss of weight). Tolppola was subsequently banned from boxing by the Finnish Professional Boxing Association subsequently gave Tolppola two-year suspension from boxing effective immediately after to the Laitinen fight.
From 2007 to 2009 Tolppola was a contender for in the European as well as the European Union super-lightweight titles twice each time, but he lost both of the fights. In his fourth attempt with Giuseppe Lauri on 30 May 2009, the fight came to an end in a highly controversial fashion in which Tolppola was disqualified for the first time after ten rounds for multiple fouls. Immediately after, his father was adamant about the ring and punched the referee.

The amateur career of Tolppola was incredibly successful. Tolppola had 135 victories in 175 bouts, including four consecutive gold medals at the Finnish national championships for amateurs: silver for 1998 (light-flyweight) and 2001 (flyweight) in 2001 (bantamweight) and silver at the 1999 (bantamweight). The 2000 European Championships, he received a bronze medal for the flyweight division.
Tolppola was a professional for the first time on the 10th of December 2001, when he won by a four-round point decision over Anton Vontszemu. His first chance to compete in an event in the regional level took place on November 26, 2004 when he faced Michele Orlando for the vacant IBF International welterweight title. Competing in a different country than Finland in his first fight in his professional career, Tolppola lost a narrow 12 round split decision in Orlando’s home Italy. A month later, on January 28 2005 Tolppola was back on the roads, but lost the 10-round points contest against David Barnes in Scotland.
In April 2016, Tolppola announced his intention to appeal the decision, maintaining his innocence and calling into question the Association’s testing procedures. This appeal was rejected by a court in June of that year, who determined that there were no sufficient grounds for lifting his ban. Boxing promoter Joona Jalkanen announced in October that Tolppola would return to the ring immediately after his ban was lifted, on 13 May 2017, and would be looking to challenge for a European title at some stage, but the fight did not take place.
