Juha Matti Ahokas (born on the 18th of September 1969, in Kokkola) is an amateur retired Finnish Greco-Roman wrestler who wrestled in the male super heavyweight division. Ahokas has won 30 Finnish championship titles, and has collected the four gold medals (one gold three silvers along with a bronze) at the European Championships, and also competed for his home country of Finland at four times during the Olympic Games (1988, 1992 1996, 1998 in 2004 and 1988). Through his entire sporting career, Ahokas competed for the Nurmon Jymy Wrestling Club in Seinajoki under the guidance of his father and his personal trainer Risto Ahokas.

Eight years since having competed in his first Olympics and missing the previous Games due to a back injuries, Ahokas qualified for the Finnish team aged 34 years old and in the 120-kg class of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. In the course of his selection his ticket was issued and was able to secure seventh place at in 2003’s World Wrestling Championships in Creteil, France. The frail and aged Ahokas was unable to win two straight matches against his former rival Deak-Bardos (0-3) as well as Sajjad barzi of Iran, in an 1-2 brawl in the preliminary pool, coming in 17th among the twenty Super Heavyweight wrestling champions.

Despite an incredible upset in his third Games Ahokas was able to win his first gold medal in 1997 at the European Championships in Kouvola, and continued to enjoy his sports success during the latter part of 1990 and into the into the 2000s. He defeated Hungary’s Mihaly deak-Bardos to win the gold medal in the 120kg section at the 2003 European Championships in Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro.

Ahokas made his debut, at the age of 18 teenager, at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul and lost his second elimination round to U.S. wrestler Dennis Koslowski in the men’s heavyweight section. The following year during the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona Ahokas took on the super heavyweight division (130 kilograms) and knocked Greek’s Panagiotis Poikilidis to the floor, claiming the score of 1-0 in sudden death to win a strong seventh place.

In a bid to make it back in the Olympic scene and earn a medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics at Atlanta as the top medal contender in the men’s 130-pound class. He defeated the Swedish Tomas Johansson in his opening match, but was stricken by an enormous fall from unbeatable Russian and the reigning Olympic winner Aleksandr Karelin in the third round. In the third round, he was battling Ukraine’s Petro Kotok during the fourth repetition, Ahokas could not score even a single point to take down his opponent. He was defeated with a 14th-place finish.

Ahokas ended his illustrious sporting career with another silver medal at the 2006 European Championships in Moscow, before he officially retired by the following year due to spinal and shoulder injuries sustained in the past.
