Urrutia was a player in the first team in the 1987-88 season. He played all 90 minutes of an 1-1 draw in the home game with Sporting de Gijon, then added five more La Liga games in the following season, despite the relegation process followed by promotion to the reserves. In 1989-1990, he was still registered as a reserve, but later entered the former side and scored his first goal with the club on April 1, 1990 in the team draw 2-2 at home against Real Valladolid which was played in the Real Sociedad’s stadium, Atotxa Stadium.

Urrutia is a native of Bilbao, Biscay, and was a member from the youth academy that was part of Athletic Bilbao based at Lezama. His debut appearance as a B-side player for the club on the 9th of September, 1984 at just 16 because of a strike by professional players.
