On 16 February 2020, he set a new 5k world road race record in Monaco with a time of 12:51. The previous record was 13:22 set by Robert Keter on 9 November 2019 in Lille, France.

Joshua Kiprui Chitegei (born in September 12, 1997) is an Ugandan Long- distance racer. The year 2017 was the time he was the silver medallist in the 10,000m race during the World Championship in London. In 2018 He set a new world record for the 15km road race. He also became the World Cross Country champion in the year 2019. At the World Championships in Doha, the gold medal was his in the men’s 10,000 meters final. In the year 2020, he set the world’s first road 5km record in 12:51 in Monaco and beat the previous record by nine seconds.

He won a silver medal in the 10,000 meter race during the 2017 World Championships in London. He also took part in the 10,000 meters during the 2015 World Championships in Beijing finishing in ninth place. He also competed in the 2015 Summer Olympics with a 5000 meters and 10,000 meters, finishing in the eighth and sixth positions respectively. Cheptegei was the 5000 meters and 10,000 meters champion during the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Cheptegei was the winner of the senior men’s race at the 2019 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. He won in 31:40 on the 10.24 km course. Ugandan teammate Jacob Kiplimo finished second in 31:44. As Thomas Ayeko placed 7th and Josehp Ayeko tenth, Uganda won the team first place title.
