Joshua Ryan Henry Earnest (born on the 22nd of January 1975) is an American public affairs professional, former campaign employee as well as a White House aide who served as the 27th White House press secretary under the presidency of Barack Obama, from 2014 until 2017. Earnest succeeds Jay Carney as Obama’s press secretary in 2014 and was replaced by the first press secretary for the presidency, Sean Spicer. He is currently serving as Director of Communications and Senior Vice President of United Airlines.

Then, he joined the Obama Presidential campaign during March 2007, as the Iowa Communications Director. Following Obama’s Iowa caucus win and the election of his campaign’s top communications adviser in various primary contests, including South Carolina, Texas and Pennsylvania. In 2008’s general election, Earnest served as the deputy director of communications for the Obama campaign. Following the election, Obama won the presidency, Earnest was transferred from Washington, D.C. and was appointed as the director of communications for the inaugural committee for the president.

In August 2012, Earnest married Natalie Wyeth in a Christian ceremony at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, D.C. His wife is a great-granddaughter of illustrator N. C. Wyeth, a granddaughter of engineer Nathaniel C. Wyeth, and a former veteran Treasury Department official. They have a son and a daughter.

On May 30, 2014, Obama announced that Josh Earnest would succeed Carney as the White House press secretary. In an annual survey conducted by the Politico Magazine in April 2015, he was voted the most helpful press official in the Obama administration and the best White House press secretary by nearly 70 journalists.

Following his time at Capitol Hill, Earnest worked for the Democratic National Committee, from 2003 to 2006 with Terry McAuliffe and Howard Dean. Earnest was the communications director on Jim Davis’ campaign for governor of Florida in 2006. He relocated to Iowa in December of 2006, to become the national communications director for Iowan governor Tom Vilsack’s presidential run.
