Joseph Abiodun Balogun, FAS, (born January 1, 1955) is a Distinguished Professor within the College of Health Sciences at Chicago State University, USA and Emeritus Professor of Physiotherapy at the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo City, Nigeria. He was in charge from 1999 until 2013 as the Dean of the College of Health Sciences at Chicago State University (CSU). When he was in CSU As Dean of the College, Balogun created his HIV/AIDS Research and Policy Institute to address the significant and burdens that HIV/AIDS imposes in the minority population.
As of 2015, Balogun presented the Christopher Ajao’s third keynote address in the annual 55th Conference of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy. The year before, he presented the 2nd Distinguished University Guest Lecture at the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo City in Nigeria. Balogun is on the Editorial Board for the International Journal of Physiotherapy Theory and Practice.
Balogun holds the rank of Fellow in the Royal Society for Public Health (FRSPH) and a fellow of the Academy of Science (FAS) and a fellow of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (FNSP) and a an Associate of the American College of Sports Medicine (FACSM). Balogun is the very first physical therapist to be awarded an FAS award. He received the award in 2003. received an award called the J. Warren Perry Distinguished Author’s Award by the Journal of Allied Health.

Balogun is a native of Nigeria and began his west education at Kabba Division Joint Education Council Primary School in Idofin and was awarded the Primary School Certificate from the ECWA/SIM Primary School located in Makutu, Kogi State, Nigeria. Balogun graduated in the year 1972 at St. Kizito’s College located in Itedo, a Catholic Secondary school (Ordinary level) in Itedo and, in 1973, finished the high-school (Advanced level) studies through Offa Grammar School. He earned the Master of Science (Honors) degree in Physiotherapy at the age of 1977 from the Nigerian University at Ibadan. Balogun emigrated in the US in 1980 , and received his master’s degree Orthopedic as well as Sports Physical Therapy (1981) as well as a Ph.D. on Exercise Physiology with a Minor in Research Methodology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1985. He was citizen of the United States as a naturalized American citizenship in the year 1998.
Balogun began his professional career as a physiotherapist in the year 1978 with the Mubi General Hospital where he was a part of the compulsory 1-year National Youth Service, and set up the very first Physiotherapy Department in the defunct Gongola State. He was a part of the Kwara State Civil Service as Basic Physiotherapist in 1979. He was employed in the General Hospital in Ilorin until 1980 when he departed for his postgraduate studies within the USA. Balogun has served as a faculty member in administrative, visiting, and visiting post in Russell Sage College; Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile- Ife, University of Florida, Gainesville; Texas Woman’s University, Houston; State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn (SUNY-HSCB); Barry University, Florida; and King Saud University, Saudi Arabia. He was employed for six years as the chairman of the Physical Therapy Program (1993-1999) and Associate Dean for Student Academic Affairs (1994-1999) at SUNY-HSCB. He also was a consultant physiotherapist (1988-1991) and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at OAU (1990-1991).
