Marcelino Rivera Alicea (born August 6 1960) more popularly called Jose Luis Rivera is a Puerto Rican semi-retired professional wrestler. He was famous for his involvement with the World Wrestling Federation (today known as WWE) in which there was also a name for him: Conquistador #1 as well as Conquistador Uno in the days when he wrestled with his fellow Puerto Rican Jose Estrada, Sr..
On the 17th of March, 1987, Rivera was joined by other preliminary wrestler Randy Colley to form the team known as The Shadows. Colley was named “Shadow
1” while Rivera was called “Shadow #2” and making their debut as a group on
the same day, they defeated the team consisting of Lanny Poffo as well as Nick Kiniski. The Shadows’ triumph however, wasn’t for long and they began an argument with their fellow teams in the preliminary group of Paul Roma and Jim Powers who were referred to as the Young Stallions, Rivera and Colley lost every game they played against the Stallions until the beginning of 1987. Despite the fact that Rivera could beat Jim Powers in some house show-matches, they failed to find the same success in the following months and ended up losing to Jim Powers. Brian Blair and they lost every match against The Bees. From 1987 on, Rivera exclusively wrestled at house shows. She didn’t make it on television until November 17. Rivera and Colley slowly disbanded in 1987, and Rivera began a partnership with another prelim. wrestler , and Puerto Rican Jose Estrada, Sr.. Rivera and Estrada’s first match together was a non- telecast match that appeared to be a one-time teaming between Estrada as well as Rivera against the Killer Bees on November 15. The match was as usual. Rivera as well as Estrada lost.
After leaving both the WWF and WCW, Rivera returned to his homeland, Puerto Rico in late 1991. Rivera signed with a local promotion, American Wrestling Federation (AWF) successfully challenging (and winning) the AWF Americas Title from then champion Ricky Sexton in his very debut with the company. On January 31, 1992, Rivera dropped the AWF Americas Title to Jason The Terrible. Rivera regained the title on February 22, but ultimately drop it permanently to Huracán Castillo, Jr. Rivera left the AWF and sign a contract with rival promotion World Wrestling Council and remained with promotion until 1994. On March 19, 1994 Rivera had what was considered at the time, his last match, facing and defeating local wrestler El Exotico.
In 2005, after an 11-year hiatus from wrestling, Rivera returned on November 11 to World Wrestling Council, now considered a legend to the promotion, he wrestled in a tag-team match teaming up with fellow local wrestler Dr. Cesar Vargas to defeat the team of Rivera’s WWF partner and rival, Jose Estrada, Sr. and Rico Suave. In 2006, after a 12-year hiatus from wrestling, Rivera returned on January 8, where he was defeated by local wrestler Glamour Boy Shane. Rivera signed with in an independent promotion named New Wrestling Stars (NWS) working as Sultán Jose Luis Rivera Rivera had two matches, the aforementioned defeat against Boy Shane, and a second match where he teamed up with El Nene to defeat the team of Boy Shane and Huracán Castillo, Jr. On October 29, Rivera appeared at an independent local promotion, where he defeated local wrestler, Wizard. In 2007, Rivera had two appearances at another local promotion. On January 14, 2007 Rivera teamed with fellow local wrestlers Shijan Rek and Renegade to defeat the team of Van Axel, Stryder, El Assassin in an “Australian Rules” match. Then on February 13 that same year Rivera defeated El Profe by disqualification. On January 25, 2014, Rivera surprisingly reappeared in the APW “Wrestle-Reunion 3” at a Royal Rumble match won by local wrestler Shayne Hawke.
Rivera and Estrada presented the “Conquistador” outfit and masks on the same day. Rivera returned to TV but this time as “Los Conquistadores” Rivera and Estrada wrestled in their first bout as a official pair Strike Force, a team comprised by Tito Santana and Rick Martel. Rivera and Estrada like normally, lost. According to Rivera the two visited Vince McMahon and told him about the idea behind the team and According to Rivera, McMahon liked the idea. Rivera and Estrada finished in 1987 with losing streaks, including losing five games in a row at a house show – games against The Rougeau Brothers, a team consisting from Jacques Rougeau and Raymond Rougeau. The year 1988 was the last time Rivera along with Estrada continued playing together, but usually in the loser’s camp of their games including The Killer Bees, British Bulldogs (a team made up of Dynamite Kid, Davey Boy Smith) and The Young Stallions. The team did win one match, however, Rivera and Estrada surprisingly won a win (albeit not broadcast) against The Rougeau Brothers on January 10 that was one of the highlights of the team. The team’s success came in February 15 which was the day that Rivera and Estrada were able to defeat The Killer Bees’ team The Killer Bees, albeit the game was also not telecast. On November 30, the first victory for the Conquistadors’ team consisting of Rivera and Estrada came when they beat one of the most pressured tag-teams in the era, The Rockers, a group comprised of Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty. The Conquistadors most memorable moment as a team was at Survivor Series (1988) where they were one of the final teams competing in the ring with The Powers of Pain. The Conquistadors were close to winning but The Powers of Pain won with the help of the manager, Mr. Fuji. In 1989, the pairing between Rivera and Estrada was becoming less frequent and Rivera gradually reverting to his previous ring name “Jose Luis Rivera” although the name was still “Conquistador #1” on TV-Tapings at this point, and at the same time Rivera was also turning face. Always on the losing side of wrestling matches against wrestlers with experience like Nikolai Volkoff, and Jim Duggan, Rivera occasionally gained victories against fellow novice wrestlers like Steve Lombardi and Paul Roma. Rivera was given the chance to take on his former team on November 27. He appeared in the role of “Jose Luis Rivera” and Estrada acting in the role of “Conquistador #1”, with Rivera taking the victory. in 1990, Estrada was kicked out of the WWF while Rivera continued to perform under the name of “Conquistador #1” Rivera first and final victory of the year of 1990 was on January 15 when the wrestler beat Brian Costello. In November, Rivera teamed with Chris Hawn to take on his former opponent and new heel Paul Roma and Hercules Hernandez who was dubbed Power and Glory. Rivera along with Chris Hawn fell to defeat. Rivera quit in 1991 to join WCW however he returned for a single appearance in WWF on April 22nd. WWF on April 22nd in which he was defeated by Koko B. Ware in a non-telecast event. He left after a whole decade with the organization.

Rivera joined the then-World Wide Wrestling Organization (WWWF) and began his career on July 10, 1975, as The Heel Red Demon where he fought and was defeated by the pinfall wrestler Mike Conrad. According to Rivera his account, his first match in the WWWF was against Ivan Koloff.
The year 1982 saw Rivera came back to the WWWF in 1982, however in the meantime, the organization was under a new administration in the form of Vincent Kennedy McMahon had bought the WWWF from his father Vincent James McMahon during the period that Rivera was absent. He also transformed the title of the business in 1979. The name was changed to World Wrestling Federation (WWF) Rivera was then renamed changed to Mac Rivera and was mostly employed as a face preliminaries wrestler for WWF TV-Tapings, with the exception of an event that was not telecast. Rivera began 1984 by continuing his winning streak through the month of January by winning telecasts against other prelim wrestlers Tony Colon, Frankie Williams as well as Israel Matia, and an untelecast win against John Callahan but was eventually defeated by another preliminary wrestler, Tiger Chung Lee. Beginning with an untelecast $20.000 battle royal that was won with Andre The Giant on January 21st Rivera was unsuccessful in moving up the ranks and was losing numerous match-ups, falling to established superstars such as SD Jones, Mr. Fuji as well as Tony Garea, although Rivera was victorious against wrestlers who were less well-known, such as Charlie Fulton and Fred Marzino. One of Rivera’s most memorable moments was a fight in the box in which he fought “Boxing” Bob Orton, Jr. in early 1986. Orton beat the opponent by TKO.
