Dileita was elected Vice-President of RPP on July 3rd, 2003. She succeeded Hamadou in the post. Dileita was the leader of the coalition, known as the Union for the Presidential Majority (UMP) in the January 2003 parliamentary elections in the first candidate in the coalition’s list of candidates in Djibouti District. He was replaced as RPP Vice- President by Abdoulkader Kamil Mohamed in September 2012, as part of an extensive shake-up of the RPP leadership.

After the completion of his studies, Dileita returned to Djibouti to work in the Directorate-General of Protocol under the Presidency. He was promoted to the second highest diplomat in the Embassy of Djibouti in France in the early 1990s after which he was promoted to the Ambassador of Ethiopia at the end of 1997. He also was the representative of Djibouti in the Organization of African Unity, which is headquartered in Addis Ababa. On May 21, 2005, Dileita was reappointed as Prime Minister after Guelleh’s re- election in the April 2005 presidential election; a new government under Dileita was named on May 22.
