After spending the bulk of his time in the Thrashers organization , he was assigned to an AHL affiliate The Chicago Wolves, at the beginning in the season 2009-10 on the 8th of October in 2009 the Thrashers transferred Smotherman with the Columbus Blue Jackets in return for considerations in the future. The Blue Jackets then assigned him to their AHL affiliate Syracuse Crunch. Syracuse Crunch for the entirety of the season. He scored 32 and 10 goals in 78 games for the Crunch.
Smotherman joined GET-ligaen club EfB Esbjerg for the 2011-12 season.
For the 2012–13 season, Smotherman joined Tingsryd AIF in the Swedish second- tier league HockeyAllsvenskan. While the team finished second to last in the series and was relegated to Swedish third-tier league Division 1, only one player in the entire league scored more than his 24 goals.
He was chosen to the Atlanta Thrashers in the 4th round, 116th overall in the NHL Entry Draft. First National Hockey League goal was scored in his second game for the Thrashers with a two-point performance with Craig Anderson of the Florida Panthers on April 1st, 2008 in an 3-1 Thrashers defeat.

Smotherman was born in Corvallis, Oregon and moved to Binghamton, New York at the age of two before his family moved to Westborough, Massachusetts at the age of 10. After joining the Quebec Remparts and going by the name of Jordan LaVallee in order to join the Quebec fan base, since his mother Maureen was a French Canadian.
