It was in 1984 that Porritt released his debut book Seeing Green: Politics of Ecology Explained. The book was written while his position as the policy director for the Ecology Party. In 1999, it was still referred to in the press as “the best general guide to the politics of ecology by an ‘insider'”. After nearly 30 years of its release, it still stands as “prophetic in many respects” however it is a bit off with the timeframe the predictions are made due to the fact that Porritt did not have a clue about the growing indebtedness. In his writing before the advent online, Porritt even predicted the rise into the “information-rich, knowledge-poor” age.

Porritt served as a trustee of the World Wildlife Fund (UK) from 1991–2005. Porritt is on the advisory board of BBC Wildlife magazine and actively supports the efforts of experts promoting renewable energy and sustainable development such as Walt Patterson.

Porritt attended United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, eventually writing an introduction for The way forward : beyond Agenda 21 (1997). From 1993–1996 he chaired Stakeholder Forum for a Sustainable Future, then known as United Nations Environment and Development UK (UNED UK). The organization encourages international stakeholders to engage in decision-making for sustainable development.

In 1984, Porritt quit teaching in order to become the director of Friends of the Earth in Britain the post that he held until the year 1990. Although initially criticised for his lack of experience but in the end his work has been recognized as a key element in the success of the group during the late 1980s. He was the editor of the Friends of the Earth Handbook (1987) and also pushed Friends of the Earth to encourage practical solutions to local environmental initiatives and to think more globally and globally. While he was director, the number of members in Friends of the Earth increased from 12,700 to 22,300.

During this time Porritt became a strong public advocate of change in the Green Party. Along with Sara Parkin, he advocated for a more professional organisation with identifiable leaders, a change that was eventually approved.
