Sarna rediscovered Cora Wilburn, a celebrated 19th century poet and author of the first American Jewish novel, whose work had been forgotten.

Jonathan D. Sarna (born 10 January 1955) is the Joseph H. and Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History in the department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts and director of the Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program.
The son is Hebrew College librarian Helen Horowitz Sarna and scholar of the Bible Nahum Sarna. Born in Philadelphia and educated throughout New York City and Newton Centre, Massachusetts, Sarna was a student at Brandeis University, Hebrew College in Newton Centre, Massachusetts, Mercaz HaRav Kook in Jerusalem, Israel and Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, where he earned his doctorate in 1979.
In 2011 he was elected president of the Association for Jewish Studies and would serve in the position until 2015.
