Rowan joined the Mariners team in 2000 when the manager Alan Buckley, however following Buckley’s departure, it was his replacement Lennie Lawrence who gave Rowan his first appearance. The debut came on September 26, 2000, when he was brought on in the 76th minute in place of Daryl Clare in a League Cup 2nd round match in the 1st leg with Wolverhampton Wanderers and with what was his first touch with the ball, he scored Grimsby’s third goal of that match, which was later to be the winner in a 3-2 victory in the favour of The Mariners. Rowan was involved in another seven games in the 2000-2001 season. By the time the following summer arrived, Rowan’s performance during the preseason tour through Scandinavia provided him with the opportunity to begin with the team as one of their most popular forwards. He quickly joined forces together with Phil Jevons that saw the club briefly rise into the upper echelons in the First Division, he was always present and played in the historical victory of 2-1 League Cup victory over Liverpool in the 2001-2002 season. But due to injuries, Rowan found himself mainly out of action for the next couple of seasons. Even when he was in good health, it was often only performing a minor role in the team’s first games. This ultimately led to his departure at Blundell Park following the conclusion of the 2003-2004 season. While at Grimsby Rowan was regarded as to be a player at the top level, however, his ongoing injuries at an early age resulted in that his stint with the Mariners was the highest point of his career in football.

After his departure from Grimsby He made a switch into Football League Two side Kidderminster Harriers in the 2004-2005 season However, it was for only an indefinite period during which the club signed him on as a non-contract player. After not making a even a single game, the team let go in January 2005.

In the summer of 2007 he transferred to cross town neighbours Boston United. The club had just suffered relegation from the Football League but due to financial irregularities at York Street the club were also demoted from the Conference National a few weeks later and had to start the 2007–2008 season playing in the Conference North. In his first season with United his performances earned him being voted the Player of the Season. Despite United finishing mid table more off the field complications saw the club demoted for a second time this time into the Northern Premier League. By the end of the 2008–2009 season The Pilgriims had failed to win promotion and the manager along with most of the playing squad departed that summer.
