Jonas Alber (born March 11 in 1969) is an German musician and conductor who lives in Berlin. He was appointed general musical director for the state theater Braunschweig in 1998. He became the youngest conductor from Germany to hold the post in the year 1998.
In 2007 Alber was the conductor of his first-ever world premier of the opera by Benoit Mernier, Fruhlings Erwachen, at the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels. In the next year, he performed Mats Larsson Gothe’s Poet and Prophetess at NorrlandsOperan in Sweden. The year 2009 was the time he conducted a brand new staging of Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires and then returned to the Staatstheater Braunschweig for a fresh staged version of Beethoven’s Fidelio. In 2010 Alber directed the Richard Wagner’s Das Rheingold and Gotterdammerung at the Semperoper in Dresden as well as Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier at the Teatro Real in Madrid. in 2011, Alber directed the Orquesta Sinfonica of the Principado de Asturias in Handel’s Messiah in the cathedral of Oviedo, Spain. Alber later directed Mozart’s The Magic Flute at the Hamburgische Staatsoper in Germany.
Among his other operatic conducting performances include Tiefland by Eugen d’Albert; Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten; The Makropulos Case by Leoš Janáček; Carmina Burana by Carl Orff; Notre Dame by Franz Schmidt; Der Schatzgräber by Franz Schreker; Der Kaiser von Atlantis by Viktor Ullmann; and Mona Lisa by Max von Schillings.
In 2007 Alber directed in 2007 the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in the production of Beethoven’s Fidelio. A year later Alber conducted his conductor debuts across China as well as Japan together with Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra and the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra. The year 2010 was the first time he led his orchestra, the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Choir in Hanoi to celebrate The Year of Germany opening, featuring Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. The debut was made by The Wuhan Symphony Orchestra in China in the following year.

In Offenburg, Germany, Jonas Alber was a violinist and conductor in the Hochschule fur Musik Freiburg, in which he was a student under Nicolas Chumachenco. Later, he attended the Universitat for Music and Darstellende Kunst Vienna where he was a student of conductor under Leopold Hager and Karl Osterreicher and was certified as conductor. He was given an Herbert von Karajan Foundation scholarship in the year 1995.
Alber was appointed Kapellmeister of the Staatstheater Braunschweig in 1997. His talents quickly attracted attention. He was promoted to general music director in the following year, a post that he held until the year 2007. Some of the highlights of his tenure are his 1998-2002 staging of the Richard Wagner opera tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen. Alber was recognized internationally for his world premieres of Reigen, Wintermarchen and Julie by Philippe Boesmans, and of Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito, with a new recitative text by Manfred Trojahn in the year 2006, the year of the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth. Alber was also praised for the World Premiere of Siegfried Matthews’ Cosima.
Alber has made guest appearances with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra in South Africa. In 2008, he led the production of Mats Larsson Gothe’s Poet and Prophetess at the Cape Town Opera. Alber later returned to South Africa in summer 2011 to conduct the world premiere of Winnie the Opera by Bongani Ndodana-Breen, a work based on the life of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria.
