In this winter Strotbeck was selected to his debut on the 1982 Pan Am team rowing for the Vesper Boat Club. In the event that he didn’t be able to make it through the initial seating race Pan Am Coach John Bannan allowed Strotbeck to test the waters. After winning the seat race and several other races after, Bannan relented on his initial position and granted Strotbeck an entry into the Pan Am boat. Strotbeck’s team finished second at the 1983 Pan American Games earning the team an Olympic silver medal.

John Strotbeck III (born June 19th 1957) is an American rower, who took part in both the 1985 and 1988 Olympic Games, and was named the Olympic team captain during the latter. The company he runs, Boathouse Sports, is an outfitter of custom-designed sportswear for teams by the United States. Strotbeck now lives within Montgomery County, Pennsylvania with his wife Stephanie and Max. Max.

After an absence for a short time, Strotbeck returned to the racing world when he moved from Philadelphia around 1981. Philadelphia is a great place to be for rowers since the city provided the best coaches and rowing equipment, as well as rowing facilities along the Schuylkill River, which houses one of the biggest regattas in America and the historical Boathouse Row.

Prior to the 1984 Olympic games, the US Rowing team’s coaching philosophy had been focused on recruiting big guys from big-name schools for the Olympic and World Games. There was initially no interest in finding a spot on the team for Strotbeck who had few competitive accolades and hailed from Marietta College, a Division III program. After preliminary testing in Princeton, Strotbeck was told he would not make the 1984 Olympic team. As fate would have it, US Rowing, the sports governing body, disappointed with the lack of results in the last 10 years of world competition, and looked outside the United States for the coach of Team 1984. Kris Korzenowski, a Polish expatriate coaching the Italian team, was hired as the 1984 Olympic Rowing Team’s head coach. Because Korzenowski was not predisposed to recruiting from the predominant American rowing schools, Strotbeck found himself in the crew of the 1984 US Olympic Rowing team. Strotbeck competed over the next six years for the US National team at the 1988 Olympics, World Championships, Pan Ams and numerous European regattas.
