John Scott Tynes (born 1971) is an American writer, best recognized for his work on role-playing games, such as Unknown Armies, Delta Green, Puppetland, and for his business, Tynes Cowan Corporation. Under the imprint of Pagan Publishing, Tynes Cowan Corp. creates third-party books specifically for games like the Call of Cthulhu role-playing game under license from Chaosium and also non-fiction and fiction books under its imprint Armitage House.
The 1st of January, 2001 Tynes informed his associates that he would be moving out of the world of role-playing hoping to leave the business by the year 2002 as well. Adam Scott Glancy was named the new president of Pagan. Wizards of the Coast contacted Tynes with an offer to create the background material for the D20 version of Call of Cthulhu, which Tynes accepted and created the content with the help of authors from Pagan. The book was published in 2002.
Tynes created Puppetland (1999) in 1999 for Hogshead Publishing. Tynes along with Robin Laws wrote a new version of the Feng Shui role-playing game for Atlas Games, published in 1999. Tynes was the initial line editor of Feng Shui. Tynes created the story “Three Days to Kill” (2000) for the Atlas D20 company, Penumbra, and the adventure was the first d20-printed product that was ever sold. John Tynes founded Pagan Publishing in 1990, at just 19 years old located in Columbia, Missouri with a volunteer staff. Tynes established Pagan’s The Undefeatable Oath magazine. Dennis Detwiller got in touch with Tynes after reading an issue of the magazine after which he began working for the company. Tynes developed the game board Creatures and Cultists. The game was released in May of 1994. Tynes accepted a new position at Wizards of the Coast, working under the newly appointed Wizards RPG department lead, Jonathan Tweet. Tynes became the initial lead of content for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Tynes made the decision to relocate Pagan Publishing to Seattle that year, and the business was incorporated. Following the move, many of the plans Tynes thought of for the company were realized. When the company was founded in 1995 Tynes quit Wizards of the Coast in protest of their new corporate visions of branding. He also was briefly transferred with Daedalus Games. Daedalus appointed Tynes as their line editor of their RPG. Alongside Dennis Detwiller and Adam Scott Glancy, Tynes developed the Delta Green (1996) supplement to Call of Cthulhu; they added a new setting in 1999 by introducing “Delta Green: Countdown”. Tynes worked with Daedalus Games until they ceased production in 1997.
Tynes was introduced to Greg Stolze while they were working on “Wildest Dreams” (1993) which was a companion to Over the Edge. Stolze and Tynes collaborated on the design of their role playing game Unknown Armies; Stolze helped create the game’s mechanics. game, which Tynes was working on for several years. While Atlas Games expressed interest in Unknown Armies, Tynes decided to use Archon Games however, Tynes and Stolze discovered that Archon’s Archon’s founder Lisa Manns was shutting down Archon and gave them the rights. They searched for new publishers, which they did, and Atlas Games published the game in January of 1999. Atlas officially hired Tynes onto the team as an director of the game to work on Unknown Armies in 1999.
Following the end of Unknown Armies in 2003, Tynes withdrew from the tabletop gaming industry in order to pursue other interests, particularly film and video games. He was the producer of Pirates of the Burning Sea, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Flying Lab Software, and published in 2008 by Sony Online Entertainment. After its launch, he joined Microsoft Game Studios to work on various Xbox Live Arcade titles including South Park Let’s Go Tower Defense Play!, Toy Soldiers, and Full House Poker as a producer and game designer.
