John Papuchis (born April 23 1977) has been named special team coordinator as well as defense ends coordinator on the Florida State Seminoles football team. He was a defense coordinator with the University of North Carolina Tar Heels football team as well as for the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers.
At the time of his graduation, Papuchis was offered the same job in Louisiana State University, as an Intern in the Defensive Department and Graduate Assistant to the head coach Nick Saban, with additional responsibility for coaching the punters. In the next year was a year of change, and with Les Miles taking over for the departing Nick Saban, Bo Pelini was hired by LSU as the Defensive Coordinator. Papuchis continued to be in the LSU staff under Pelini along with the LSU defense was instrumental in helping the Tigers to achieve a 6th place in both the major polls. 2006 saw further improvements, as the LSU defense was ranked within the top ten nationally in four defensive categories. They also earned an overall #3 ranking in both polls. 2007 was an exceptional year for LSU because the defense was instrumental in helping the Tigers to beat their first BCS National Championship Game. All things considered all of the Pelini time at LSU have resulted in the Tigers defense being ranked as the third in the nation from 2005 to 2007.
The special teams unit also had a banner year under Papuchis in 2008, headlined by Henery’s school-record 57-yard game-winning field goal against Colorado. Henery finished the year 18-of-21 on field goals and missed just one extra point. Henery was a second-team All-Big 12 pick. The Huskers also ranked in the top 25 nationally in punt returns, and returned both a kickoff and punt for a touchdown in the same season for the first time since 1998.
In his first year in Lincoln, Papuchis saw starting defensive ends Zach Potter and Allen combine for 26 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks in 2008, with Potter earning honorable-mention All-Big 12 accolades. The defensive ends helped a Nebraska defense that finished second in the Big 12 in total defense.
Papuchis earned the Business Management Bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech in 2001, then he received an Sports Administration Master’s degree from the University of Kansas in 2003.

John Papuchis was born in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The school he attended was Quince Orchard High School in 1996. He was a three-sport athlete including three years playing on the Varsity baseball team. He received All-Montgomery County distinction as a senior and junior. He was also the leading quarterback in his senior year for QO’s QO football squad.
Papuchis has been coaching since he was with the school’s high-school level, while still in college. While at Virginia Tech, Papuchis joined the staff of Blacksburg High where he also was a coach for at the junior high school basketball team. After graduating of Virginia Tech in 2001, Papuchis started his coach career with the University of Kansas under Head Coach Terry Allen as a Graduate Assistant. He was a part of his Kansas Jayhawks defensive unit, while pursuing an advanced degree. In his final season at Kansas He was instrumental in helping the Jayhawks to win their first ever Tangerine Bowl that put an end to Kansas the team’s seven-year absence of bowl appearances.
Just prior to LSU’s 2007 season national championship, Pelini was hired as the new Head Coach for the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers football team. Pelini stayed on at LSU through the championship game with the permission of Nebraska’s Athletic Director, Tom Osborne, and then took several of his defensive staff members with him to Nebraska, including Papuchis.
