Thomas Lee Strickland (born May 16th 1952) is an American lawyer who was the chief of staff for Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks within the Interior Department. Strickland was the United States Attorney for Colorado and was the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate for Colorado between 1996 and 2002. He was hired by WilmerHale as an associate in September 2011.

The most famous cases of Strickland’s include the indictment of 25 individuals associated with an important cocaine distribution ring located outside Colorado Springs, Colo. The indictment of 42 individuals belonging to the motorcycle gang, as well as the indictment of officials from three drug- running organizations as part of one of the most significant drug roundups in Colorado’s history. He was also the prosecutor in 2000 when he supervised the prosecution one of the largest drug busts in the history of Longmont, which expanded to encompass California as well as Nebraska and included authorities from the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Attorney’s office, the Federal Housing Authority and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

On April 24, 2007, he was appointed executive vice president and chief legal officer of UnitedHealth Group, a diversified health and well-being company headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota and serving more than 70 million individuals nationwide. He was brought in as part of a new management team following a “stock options backdating scandal” and was credited for having “cleaned up the backdating mess.” At UnitedHealth, he managed an in-house team of 200 attorneys and a nationwide team of outside counsel. In 1996, the United States Senate election in Colorado in 1996 was held for the open seat that resulted from the resignation of Hank Brown. Strickland was a member of his fellow members of the Sierra Club and had served as a member of the regional board of the Environmental Defense Fund; he was supported by almost all environmental groups in Colorado However, Strickland’s Republican adversary, Wayne Allard, who was a poor environmentalist took a ploy borrowed from his lawyer co-partner, Steve Farber, and portraying Strickland in the role of “the polluters’ lawyer” in advertisements that drew on the findings of his legal work for a variety of clients throughout his ten-year legal career. Strickland could only respond by referring to his obligation to defend the interests of his clients in a fervent manner. He was unable to catch up in the elections and was ultimately defeated.

Allard’s winning strategy was to characterize Strickland as a “millionaire-lawyer- lobbyist.” Strickland ran on moderate positions. Both candidates had help from prominent party leaders, Allard being helped by President George W. Bush.
