He was picked from the Panthers in the second round, 33rd overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. The professional hockey team retired on February 6, 2019.
In his debut season in the OHL, McFarland competed for Team Ontario in the 2009 World U-17 Hockey Challenge on Vancouver Island where his Team Canada took home an Olympic gold medal. He was the tournament’s scoring leader with an average of 12 points. He made the tournament’s all-star team.
McFarland was drafted by the Florida Panthers 33rd Overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
After four seasons as a professional within the Florida Panthers organization, McFarland left as a free agent to sign a one-year contract with Finnish club, SaiPa of the top-tier Liiga on July 24, 2016.

Instead, McFarland played in the 2007-08 season for Toronto’s Toronto Jr. Canadiens, which saw him accumulate the score of 165 points with the score of 96 goals along with 69 points. McFarland won the title of tournament’s top player during in the OHL Showcase tournament, where McFarland was the captain of his team the Jr. Canadiens to an OHL Cup win.
The Sudbury Wolves were drafted by McFarland as the first pick in 2008’s OHL Priority Selection. McFarland was awarded the Jack Ferguson Award, which the OHL gives annually to the player who was selected top of the line in the OHL Priority Selection. He joined Wolves in August 2008. On December 9, 2010, Sudbury traded McFarland (along with defenseman Ben Chiarot and a third-round pick in 2011) to the Saginaw Spirit in exchange for Michael Sgarbossa, Alex Racino, Frank Schumacher and a fourth-round pick.
