John Francis Holecek (born May 7th 1972) is an ex-professional American footballer who was a linebacker for an entire season in the NFL for the Buffalo Bills, the San Diego Chargers as well as the Atlanta Falcons. He was a student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was selected with the Buffalo Bills in 1995, then joined the San Diego Chargers in 2001 and then played for the Atlanta Falcons in 2002. Holecek was a player for the NFL for eight seasons after which he returned to the Chicago the area. He coaches football for Loyola Academy – who won the the Class 8A Illinois Football State Championships. Holecek is a finalist for his 2015 National Coaching of the Year award.
Holecek was a starter in eight games during throughout his initial 3 seasons playing for the Bills (1995-1998). After being limited to one game in his debut season due to an injury Holecek was poised to contribute regularly with the squad in the year 1996. However, another knee injury sustained during the preseason’s first game forced him into spending all of the year in injured reserve. Holecek was also working towards completing his MBA degree in the course of these seasons. In 1997, Holecek offered an early glimpse into his bright future, recording an 86-plus tackles over eight games (14 games). The head coach Marc Levy stated decades later that Holecek was among his most favored NFL player to mentor.
Holecek was drafted in 1995 by the Buffalo Bills in the fifth round if the NFL draft (144th pick) of the 1995 draft. Holecek was drafted by Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Marv Levy. Holecek also played for NFL coach Wade Phillips.
