In early January 2006 Gieve was appointed as the new Deputy Governor for Financial Stability at the Bank of England. The appointment was for a five- year term, and carried with it membership of the influential Monetary Policy Committee.
Later in 2006, Charles Clarke was dismissed as Home Secretary and replaced by John Reid, who shortly after his appointment made a statement to Parliament in which he described the Home Office as “unfit for purpose”.
Gieve was the permanent secretary of the Home Office from 2001 to the year 2005. In the period The Home Office was the government department in charge of law and order, which included police and probation services, prisons and probation and oversight of MI5 as well as immigration and nationality issues. As the Permanent Secretary, Gieve was responsible for the administrative functions of the department as well as its civil servants. They were subordinate with the Ministerial team, which was led by Home Secretary. In the time that Gieve was in the Home Office, there were three Home Secretaries: Jack Straw (until 2001), David Blunkett (2001-2004) as well as Charles Clarke (from 2004).
