Joseph Leonard MacDonald (born February 7 August, 1980) is an Canadian professional goalie in ice hockey. He was previously a part of the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, New York Islanders, Toronto Maple Leafs, as well as the Calgary Flames.
On the 8th of July on the 8th of July, 2007, MacDonald signed a contract for two years as an unrestricted free-agent in the New York Islanders. MacDonald was later assigned to an the affiliate team with that is the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL.
In the 2008–09 season, MacDonald became the Islanders regular backup goalie. This is due to the departure of the team’s previous backup, Wade Dubielewicz, as an UFA and his subsequent signing in Russia. This also had to do with the second year of MacDonald’s contract being a one-way deal. Many Islanders fans were apprehensive about this arrangement, feeling that MacDonald may not be ready to be DiPietro’s backup on a regular basis- especially since they hoped their starting netminder was going to get more time to rest. That time to rest came earlier than expected as DiPietro started the season recovering from an injury and then went out once again to another injury after two losses. MacDonald finished the season with a 14-26-6 record, to go along with a 3.37 goals against average. A high point of his season was a 2-0 victory against his former team, the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena. MacDonald made 42 saves while recording his first career shutout in the NHL.
On August 10, 2009, MacDonald was signed to a one-year contract by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Prior to the 2009–10 season, MacDonald was placed on waivers and was assigned the starting goaltender for the Toronto Marlies of the AHL, on September 29, 2009. On October 8, 2009, MacDonald was called up to the Maple Leafs to back up Vesa Toskala. He would later get his first ever start with the Maple Leafs on October 13, 2009.
MacDonald was invited to the NHL during the 2006-07 season after he was selected as an extra goalie for Dominik Havek and Chris Osgood of the Detroit Red Wings. MacDonald was able to make his NHL debut on the 19th of October of 2006 in a game against the San Jose Sharks. Detroit was 3-0 down when MacDonald was substituted to replace Osgood after he allowed three power-play goals in just 15 minutes in the period one. But it took five more games, during which he started as the goalie, until MacDonald got his first NHL win , an 8-4 win against Toronto’s Calgary Flames on February 11 in 2007.

MacDonald started his hockey career as a junior within the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for the 1997-98 season . He played with The Halifax Mooseheads. For 17 matches, MacDonald won only three wins. However, he continued to refine his game and style with a flair that impressed the coaching staff during the process. It was the Ontario Hockey League then came to the scene in the next season, and MacDonald was signed by his team the Peterborough Petes as their starting goalie. MacDonald was successful in his expanded position, and finished with winning records and lower goal against average. MacDonald remained Pete’s primary goalie through the 2001-02 season in which he joined with the Toledo Storm of the ECHL after signing with the Detroit Red Wings as a free agent.
MacDonald was a struggle with the poor ECHL team and only scored 12 wins in 38 games. In the end, the Red Wings sent MacDonald to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL during 2003-2002 AHL season to fill in for Marc Lamothe. MacDonald proved himself to be a good player in his new position having scored 14 wins and 6 losses during the 25 games which he took part in. In 2003-04, the AHL season was a time when MacDonald playing alongside Lamothe. The Griffins were getting enough experience and after Lamothe was let go the next campaign, MacDonald was named starting goalie. MacDonald was part of the 66 games played by the Griffins which culminated in an overall record of 34-29-2 with an average save rate of .926. In 2005, the AHL season saw the influx of goalies in the Red Wings farm system and MacDonald was a contender to remain near the top of the list. He played along with Drew MacIntyre and new prospect Jimmy Howard. MacDonald ended the season 17-9-2 over 32 games.
On February 24, 2007, the Boston Bruins picked up MacDonald on waivers. He played his first game with the Bruins on March 4, 2007 resulting in a 4–1 win over the New Jersey Devils.
