Joel Luani (born 16 February 1992) is a professional league footballer who was last playing in the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in the Intrust Super Premiership. He is hooker. He also was a player with the Wests Tigers in the NRL.
After being 18th-man numerous times during the 2012 NRL season Luani was able to make the NRL debut with the Tigers against the Parramatta Eels in round 22. Luani played three games during a time frame when Robbie Farah was unavailable due to injury. He scored one try.
Luani made his debut for Tonga at the end of 2014. In 2015, he played halfback in a mid-season test against Samoa, and was described as one of, “the halves changing perceptions of Pacific rugby league teams having an inability to produce quality playmakers.”
Luani didn’t play in any first-grade games for the Tigers in 2015 and at the end of the season, was not re-signed by the club.
After this season Luani has been selected as a part of the United States 2013 World Cup team. Luani made his debut for the United States in the 2013 World Cup. as a hooker in the team that beat Cook Islands 32-20, in the first-ever World Cup match.

He attended the college where his father was a student at Newington College (2008-2010) and was part of the 1st XV of the union rugby team during three seasons. In the final year of school , he was a part of Newington’s GPS winning rugby union team. He also was part of the Australian Schoolboys rugby union team. He was also a junior footballer for Five Dock before being signed by the Wests Tigers.
Luani was a member of his Tigers’ NYC team in 2011 and 2012. He was a second row on the team that won the premiership in 2012. The coach Todd Payten said, “Joel played in the back row, which was not his preferred position and not once did he complain. He just went out and did the job each week.”
On 29 July 2013, Luani re-signed with the Tigers on a 2-year contract.
