Hanley has played previously for the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens and Arizona Coyotes.

On July 1st, 2017, following his departure from the quit the Canadiens as an unrestricted free agent, Hanley agreed to a one-year, two-way deal to the Arizona Coyotes. The 2017-18 season saw Hanley was initially assigned to the AHL affiliate that of the Tucson Roadrunners. Then, he was recalled by the Coyotes due to injuries. He was forced to play in 5 games throughout the season for the Coyotes.

At the end of summer 2015, Hanley was signed to a contract for two ways to the Montreal Canadiens organization and reported to the team’s AHL affiliate, The St. John’s IceCaps. After a series incidents of injury to Canadiens defensemen, Hanley was recalled and took part in the first NHL game on the 20th of March the 20th of March, 2016. Hanley scored the first two assists just two days later.

Hanley is a native of Keswick, Ontario. When he was a kid Hanley participated at his first Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament as part of his York-Simcoe Express minor ice hockey team.

Hanley played in Junior A for his team the Newmarket Hurricanes before spending four seasons playing for his team, the UMass Minutemen ice hockey of the NCAA. After his time at UMass Hanley signed his first professional deal in the American Hockey League’s Portland Pirates. The team played the span of two years (2013-2015) playing in Portland and was later deported from the ECHL’s Gwinnett Gladiators.
