Joel Ekstrand is one of the most popular and richest Swedish footballer who was born on February 4, 1989 in Lund, Sweden. Lars Hening Joel Ekstrand (born on February 4, 1989) is an Swedish former soccer player who was a defensive player. He played for Sweden at senior international levels and also at various youth levels.
The 2009 campaign was a success. Ekstrand kept his place as a regular player for the first team and was instrumental in helping the team get to winning form during the three league games that began towards the end of the start of the season. He was then sent off only a few minutes before half-time break, in the 2-0 defeat against Orebro on the 20th of April, 2009. After serving a single match exclusion, Ekstrand returned to the first team, scoring an assist for Rasmus Jonsson who scored a hat-trick during a 3-0 win against AIK on the 29th of April, 2009. In his return to his first place in the team since being reinstated from suspension, Ekstrand signed a contract with the club and will be with his place until the end of 2012. He got his goal during the second game in the UEFA Europa League second round with a draw of 2-2 against Zestafoni to advance into an additional round. But, Ekstrand was once again sent off when he was given straight red cards in the first halfof an 3-0 defeat to Orgryte on the 18th of October, 2009. Despite being sent off and injuring himself at four times later the season, he was able to play 32 times throughout the season in all matches.
With the 2010 season ended, Ekstrand was linked a move away from Helsingborgs IF, as clubs from Italy were keen on signing him. The club confirmed that Ekstrand was expected to leave the club. After a much speculation over his future, it was announced that Ekstrand joined Udinese in 2011.
In the 2010 season, Ekstrand was in defensive first team position when he helped the side go on unbeaten run for the first twelve matches to the start season. While the club go on the unbeaten run, he received a straight red card in the first half, in a 1–0 win over Mjällby on 26 April 2010 and served a two match suspension. After returning to the first team, Ekstrand scored his first league goal for the club, in a 3–1 win over Gefle on 10 May 2010. He was later suspended on two occasions later in the season, including another straight red, in a 0–0 draw against Göteborg on 15 August 2010, and injury concerns as well. Nevertheless, Ekstrand finished the season, winning the Svenska Cupen Final and making 25 appearances and scoring once in all competitions. At the end of the 2010 season, he was nominated for the player’s back of the year but lost out to Olof Mellberg.
Ekstrand has played for Sweden U15 as well as Sweden Sweden U16 Sweden U17 Sweden U18 Sweden U19, and Sweden U21. When at Sweden U21 Ekstrand played nine times for the team and scored a score in the match against Estonia U21 on June 9th 2009.

Ekstrand began playing football with his hometown team Lunds BK as a youth player. In 2005, Ekstrand moved towards Helsingborgs IF and two years after when he got his first contract as a professional during the summer.
After being selected to the Helsingborgs IF squad in February 2008, Ekstrand made his first team debut against PSV Eindhoven in the first stage of the UEFA Cup Round of 32 at Philips Stadion in which Helsingborgs fall to PSV Eindhoven 2-0. Ekstrand was again featured in the second match of the UEFA Cup Round of 32 at Olympia stadium, where they ended in a loss of 2-1 which saw them be out of the competition. Ekstrand was able to make the Helsingborgs IF debut, where the entire game was played during a 3-0 victory against GIF Sundsvall in the opening game of the season. In a draw of 2-2 against IFK Norrkoping on 20 April 2008, he began the game but was removed at 7:07 minutes after an accident and sustained concussion and a broken nose. After being absent from the next game as because of injury, Ekstrand made his return to the first team after a injury and started the entire game, including the 4-2 victory over Malmo on April 28, 2008. Since that time, Ekstrand had developed himself into a major player for Helsingborg IF with the likes of Marcus Nilsson, Andreas Granqvist and Samir Beloufa. Although he missed the rest of the season, he managed to make 28 appearances across every competition during his debut season. At the conclusion of the 2008 season Ekstrand was nominated for Newcomer of Year Award, but fell short to Robin Soder.
In December 2009, Ekstrand was called up by Sweden for the first time. After appearing as an unused substitute against Oman for the first time on 20 January 2010, Ekstrand made his full Sweden debut in a friendly against Syria in 2010. Ekstrand’s performances with Watford were rewarded with a return to the Sweden squad for the friendly game against Argentina on 6 February 2013. However, he withdrew from the squad due to a knee injury. It wasn’t until on 5 March 2014 when he made his first Sweden appearance in four years, in a 2–1 loss against Turkey.

On 31 August 2012, Ekstrand joined Championship side Watford on a season-long loan from Udinese. It came after when he informed the Udinese management that he wanted to leave the club for first team football and was close to joining Eredivisie side Groningen but collapsed over transfer demands.

Prior to the 2014–15 season, Ekstrand was keen on leaving Watford despite having a remaining two years to his contract.
