Joe Merten is one of the most popular and richest American basketball player who was born on February 23, 1959 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, United States. Joseph H. Merten (February 23rd 1959 – – March 19th January 19, 2008) was an American basketball player and coach. He was a small forward, and his height was listed as 6 7 inches tall (2.01 meters).
Merten had the opportunity to be offered the position of head coach of the Flyers during the 1986-87 season, but he declined the chance. Merten was employed by Menards located in Eau Claire as a building materials manager.
Merten attended the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire from 1977 to 1981 and played for head coach Ken Anderson’s Blugolds men’s basketball team. Merten played in 113 games (93 of which he started) for the Blugolds, who appeared in the NAIA Final Four during his final two seasons (1980, 1981). During his four years with the Blugolds, Merten accumulated 1,193 points, 598 rebounds and 439 assists. He named to the All-Wisconsin State University Athletic Conference Team three times.
In 1981, Merten joined his team, the Alberta Dusters of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). On the 20th of January, 1982 Merten had scored 42 points the game. He was a participant at the 1982 CBA All-Star game as a part of the Dusters. Merten joined the Las Vegas Silvers in 1982 however, he was traded later in this season by the Wisconsin Flyers. He was named the head manager of the Flyers in the season 1985-86. It was his first season as a coach within the CBA at the time of his appointment.

In 1979, Merten was a part of the 1979 United States men’s national basketball team that competed in the World University Games. Its team also included the future NBA basketball player Kevin McHale, won a gold medal.
He was selected in the 10th round in the 2001 NBA selection by the Utah Jazz and played for their Summer Pro League team, however, he was not selected for the roster for preseason. He participated in exhibition games for the Milwaukee Bucks during the 1981 NBA preseason however he was dropped from the roster for their regular season. He failed to make two NBA tryouts in his summer in 1982 for Indiana Pacers and the Bucks along with the Indiana Pacers.
There is an annual award known as the Joe Merten Coaching Award given out by the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire Blugold Hall of Fame. It was created by Merten’s family following his death on March 19, 2008. The award is given to an assistant coach, community coach, or student coach on a Blugolds sports team.
