Joe Madureira was born December 1974 to an American mother and an Portuguese father hailing from the Azores. He was educated at in the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan.

Madureira was the penciller of record of Uncanny X-Men in 1994. In the “Age of Apocalypse” storyline in 1994, every X-Men titles were renamed. Madureira illustrated the replacement for Uncanny X-Men as the miniseries with four issues. Astonishing X-Men, Vol. 1.

Madureira returned to the comic book industry as the artist on Marvel’s The Ultimates 3, with writer Jeph Loeb. The second issue was published in January 2008, the third issue released on February 20, 2008. Ultimates 3 #4 came out on June 25, 2008.

In July 2007, Vigil Games’ Darksiders was announced, of which Joe Madureira was creative director. It follows War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, on his quest to find out who prematurely triggered the apocalypse. It was released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on January 5, 2010.

In 1993, Madureira penciled his first Deadpool mini-series The Circle Chase. In the same year, he also sketched Vanguard #3 for Erik Larsen’s studio. It is published in 1993 by Image Comics.

Joe Madureira (often called Joe Mad born December 24, 1974) is comic book artist/writer and game designer, well recognized for the work he did on Marvel Comics’ Uncanny X-Men and his own comic book, created by him Battle Chasers. He is the creator of the video game development companies Vigil Games and Airship Syndicate.

At the age of 16, and at the time of high school Madureira started working for Marvel Comics as an intern and was working under director Danny Fingeroth. Madureira’s work that was heavily inspired by Arthur Adams, was first published as an eight-page story in the series of anthologies Marvel Comics Presents #89 (November 1991) which featured Mojo followed by an episode that featured Northstar for issue #92 (December 1992). Despite the sequence of publication, Madureira drew the Mojo story later, because his influence from Arthur Adams, who co-created Mojo is evident in the story and more in line with the style of art for which Madureira was well-known during the early years in his work. His style would evolve later by incorporating elements of Japanese manga.

He left Uncanny X-Men in 1997 to work on his own sword and sorcery series Battle Chasers for Wildstorm Comics’ creator-owned Cliffhanger imprint (before it was sold to DC Comics). Shortly before leaving Uncanny X-Men, he commented that he felt the series had become too “dark and depressing” for his taste.
