Buchanan (born on the 4th of October 1952) is a former Democratic Party public official and former school board member from Alamo, California. She was an elected Member of the California State Assembly from 2008 until 2014.

Then, in December of 2014 Buchanan made it clear that she will run for the seat of Mark DeSaulnier on the State Senate. DeSaulnier quit to be a representative for the district of 11th Congress within the US House of Representatives. She was defeated in the primary vote the 17th of March in the primary to Democrats Susan Bonilla and Steve Glazer. She has since announced her support for Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla in her State Senate Campaign.

The 18th of March, 2009 Buchanan’s home town Congresswoman Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D CA-10) was named to the presidency by president Barack Obama to serve as the Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security. Special elections to replace her post was held in 2009. Buchanan was a candidate during her Democratic Primary to replace Rep. Tauscher. She was defeated by Democratic ex-Local Governor John Garamendi.
