Johannes Jonathan Smit (born 10 November 1995) is a Namibian cricketer who made his debut as a senior in the Namibian national team at the beginning of February in 2012 age 16 years old.
In January of 2018 He was included in Namibia’s team for 2018’s ICC World Cricket League Division Two tournament. In August 2018 He was included in Namibia’s team to play in the 2018 Africa T20 Cup.
In May 2019, he was named in Namibia’s squad for the Regional Finals of the 2018–19 ICC T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier tournament in Uganda. He made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut for Namibia against Ghana on 20 May 2019.
In March 2019, he was named in Namibia’s squad for the 2019 ICC World Cricket League Division Two tournament. Namibia finished in the top four places in the tournament, therefore gaining One Day International (ODI) status. Smit made his ODI debut for Namibia on 27 April 2019, against Oman, in the tournament’s final. Following the conclusion of the competition, Smit was named as the Player of the Tournament.
In the 2013 ICC Africa Under-19 Championship, held in Uganda in May 2013 Smit scored 12 wickets, just behind Kenya’s Paramveer S. He also won the title of”Player of the Match after he took 4/17 in eight overs which included a hat- trick to assist Namibia beat Kenya with 52 runs and therefore qualify to participate in 2014’s Under-19 World Cup. Smit took part in his Under-19 One Day International (ODI) debut at the World Cup, played in the United Arab Emirates in February 2014. He was a part of the entire Namibian team during the tournament, and his eight wickets being behind the only one Bredell Wessells (14) for Namibia. A left-handed fast bowler of Keetmanshoop, Smit made his debut with the Namibian under-19 team in the season 2011-12. He took part in five games during the Khaya Majola Week, held in December 2011 with Namibia playing the under-19 teams from Namibia’s South African domestic teams. In the final stages of the season in February 2012 Smit was picked to make his debut in the first class in Namibia’s senior team. Namibian Senior team. He only took one wicket during his debut with Western Province in the South African Three-Day Provincial Competition, Mujahid behardien’s. Smit took part in a second first- class game in the following season, this time in opposition to Western Province. He played in the 2013 Intercontinental Cup and WCL Championship as well as at the 2013 World Twenty20 Qualifier, and the 2014 World Cup Qualifier. In the match against Kenya in the 2014 World Cup Qualifier in New Zealand Smit scored 323 runs in ten overs, opening alongside Louis Klazinga, limiting Kenya to 186/8 after 50 overs. As Namibia’s ninth batsman when he reached the wicket at 144/7, following Sarel Burger’s dismissal. He then got 33 not out of 25 balls. Namibia was victorious by two wickets (with seven balls left) in addition, Smit was named the man of the match.
In June 2019, he was selected to play for the Vancouver Knights franchise team in the 2019 Global T20 Canada tournament. In doing so, he became the first Namibian cricketer to sign for an international T20 franchise.
