Deenihan was born in Finuge, Lixnaw, County Kerry in 1952. He attended St. Michael’s College, Listowel as well as later in the Thomond College of Education in Limerick. Additionally, he attended colleges in the UK. His wife is Mary the daughter of the former Kerry player John Dowling, who is an instructor of economics and history at Mercy Secondary School, Mounthawk.
Deenihan was a player in Gaelic soccer with Kerry throughout the 1970s and 80s. Also, he played with Garryowen.
Deenihan also won Railway Cup medals with Munster in 1975, 1976, 1978, 1981 and 1982.
In 1976, Deenihan won his second Munster title, however, Dublin gained revenge for the previous year by defeating Kerry in the All-Ireland final. 1977 was another frustrating year as Kerry won another set of National league and Munster titles but lost out to Dublin yet again, this time in the All-Ireland semi-final. By 1978, Kerry were ready for success. They easily won another Munster title and breezed into the All-Ireland final to face Dublin. The game itself is remembered for Mikey Sheehy’s cheeky goal which he scored by lobbing the ball over the head of Paddy Cullen. The final score was 5–11 to 0–9 and Deenihan had finally secured a second All-Ireland medal. In 1979 Deenihan captured a fifth provincial title before later capturing a third All-Ireland medal following another emphatic victory over Dublin.
Deenihan enjoyed a lot of success at divisional and club levels in his own local team. At the age of under, he won his Under-14 North Kerry Championship with Finuge in 1963. A year later, in 1968 the under-16 North Kerry Championship with the Listowel Emmet’s team. He also played for St Senans. St Senans club at minor level. Alongside Finuge Deenihan also won a North Kerry Senior League title in the year 1970 in addition to the North Kerry Senior Championship title in 1987. In his local divisional team, Feale Rangers, he was awarded two county championship medals in 1978 and the year 1980. While at the college of St Mary’s University, Twickenham in London He played for the Kingdom club, and won the London Senior Football Championship.

Jimmy Deenihan (born 11 September 1952) is an ex- Irish Fine Gael politician who was Minister of State to the Diaspora from 2014 to the year 2016 and the Minister of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht from 2011 until 2014, and Minister of State in the Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry from 1994 until 1997. He was the Teachta Dala (TD) between 1987 until the year 2016. He was a senator from 1983 until 1987, after being nominated by the Taoiseach.
In the latter half of the 1960s, Deenihan was an integral member of Kerry’s inter-county setup and was playing for County’s Minor team. The year 1970 was the first time he was awarded the Munster minor medal, but it was not an All- Ireland medal. Deenihan then joined the county’s under-21 team where he was able to win back-to-back Munster championships both in 1972 and 1973 and also the All-Ireland title in 1973.
By this stage Deenihan was also a member of the Kerry senior football team. He won his first National Football League medal in 1973, however, Cork were the kingpins in the Munster Championship. Two years later in 1975, Deenihan captured his first Munster Championship and All-Ireland medals at senior level, under the new management of the legendary Mick O’Dwyer. It was the beginning of a glorious era for Kerry football and Deenihan played a key role in orchestrating much of the success.
