James Clive Adams (born 9 January 1968) was an ex- Jamaican cricketer who played for Jamaica in the West Indies as player and captain during his time. He was a consistent left-handed batsman, a useful left-handed spin bowler who was orthodox and a an excellent fielder, especially at the position of the gully. He was also a frequent wicketkeeper when needed. He was head coach of Kent County Cricket Club for five seasons from 2012 to October 2016.
He resigned from all cricket in 2004 following his twenty-year playing career that ended with a Test batting percentage of 41.26 and a record-breaking number of 208 not-outs in the match against New Zealand at St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda in 1995.
Adams was appointed West Indies captain in 2000 to replace Brian Lara. Adams would not stay long as he led his team in a series 5-0 loss during the 2000/01 tour of Australia during the tour, was over, he lost both the captaincy (to Carl Hooper) and his spot as a member of the team. His imminent departure was announced to Adams by a friend of the national TV reporter Peter Furst. Adams simply replied, “Have you heard something I haven’t?” Adams then thought about his professional life, saying that whatever had happened, it was all positive – both good and the bad.

Adams was selected for the Jamaican team during the 1984/85 season when he was young teenager. He had an average, but unspectacular beginning to his first- class cricket career. He continued to play cricket for a few years following the year 2000, serving as captain of the South African provincial team Free State and also playing appearances in the Lashings World XI in England.
It wasn’t until 1991/92 season that Adams was selected into the West Indies Test squad for the first time when he made his first appearance against South Africa at Bridgetown, Barbados. In his first twelve games, Adams recorded 1,132 runs at an average of close to 87, which was a record that was beaten by only one other player in the history of cricket in the Test in the hands of Australian Sir Donald Bradman. In the beginning of his career in Test cricket Adams averaged 61.34 against 25.58 for the later half. This difference is the highest in the history of Test cricket. In the late 1990s, he was struggling at the international levels. In a tour game against Somerset the team was struck by a bouncer thrown by player Andre van Troost, shattering his cheekbone. Between 2005 and 2006,, he was a player in the Derbyshire League with Dunstall CC in the Derbyshire League.
