Omar Naim (Arabic: `mr Nym ; born 27th September, 1977) is a Lebanese screenwriter and film director most well-known for his screenwriting and producing The Final Cut, a 2004 movie. The Final Cut.

“The Final Cut is about editing and memory” Naim said the director, who was only 27 , at that time. Naim was also adamant that his Lebanese heritage also influenced the plot of the film. “It’s the Lebanese notion of mass memory, and people’s very subjective memory and view of the world,” Naim explains. “This is what determines the way society operates. I re-expand this into sci-fi theories”.

In 2004 Naim created and directed his debut feature film, The Final Cut, which featured Academy Award winning actor and comedian Robin Williams, Academy Award award-winning actor Mira Sorvino, and Jim Caviezel. Tak Fujimoto, who is of The Silence of the Lambs and The Sixth Sense fame directed the cinematography. The film was awarded the best screenplay prize in the Deauville Film Festival and was an official selection for The Berlin Film Festival.

Omar Naim was born in Jordan to an Lebanese journalist dad and the famous Lebanese writer and actress mom Nidal Al-Ashkar. Growing up in a world of musicians, artists and writers, Naim had a childhood that was enriched by culture and art. Both of his parents worked working in the field of film and theater. The mother of his son, Nidal Al-Ashkarwho is the mother of Lebanese theater is the creator of Masrah Al-Madina (The City Theater) in which she was honored with The French state in 1997, with the Knight Grade Award for Arts and Letters.

With the assistance from The Fares Foundation, Naim went to pursue a film degree with the help of Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. While in Emerson, Naim created a variety of short films, including his thesis from 1999 with a film of 28 minutes entitled Grand Theater: A Tale of Beirut. In this film, Naim puts the spotlight on Beirut’s historical Grand Theater, which was destroyed in a bloody no-man’s-land between two bellicose factions during the Lebanese civil conflict. The theater is an illustrative representation of the tragic civil war that raged for 15 years in Lebanon. From the perspective of the former theater, the diverse stories of directors, actors and soldiers are interspersed in the Grand Theater. As war grows in size as well as absurdity, distinctions between theater and war as well as between reality and theater are blurred. The film won Naim many prizes at Emerson and an Honorable Mention and was screened at several international festivals. Naim was also one of the finalist to win the Student Oscar given by the AMPAS in 2000. Perhaps most important, the film gave the young director the hands-on experience he required to take on his next project that was in the process of being put to sleep at the time. “I learned everything making that film, from inception to print” Naim adds.
