Jim Rakete Biography

Jim Rakete is one of the most popular and richest Photographer who was born on January 1, 1951 in Berlin, Germany. Gunther “Jim” Rakete (German [dZIm Rake:t@born January 1, 1951, in Berlin, Germany) is a photographer, photographer writer, filmmaker, writer and producer who is based in Berlin.

The management of Rakete was selected to create Band fur Afrika, the German equivalent to Band Aid. The single album that resulted was composed by Herbert Gronemeyer and Wolfgang Niedeken and was performed by 27 different German musicians and bands which included Alphaville, BAP, Marius Muller-Westernhagen Nena, Peter Maffay, Spliff and Udo Lindenberg. Band fur Afrika gathered over 150 million Deutschmarks.

Soon after the Fabrik’s closure, Rakete began to almost exclusively shoot commercials and fashion spreads. In 1989, Rakete flew to Los Angeles to shoot a record video and album cover for Tangerine Dream’s Melrose. A year later, Rakete eventually rented a house in Hollywood, splitting his working year between the West Coast, Hamburg and Berlin, shooting video-clips, commercials, documentaries and fashion folders. During this period he befriended and photographed international artists, writers, film stars and directors.

With his first 1997 exhibit in Hamburg’s Galerie Barlach, Rakete’s work begins to regularly appear in international galleries.

The Fabrik was long since relocated to Berlin’s Oranienplatz at the time that members of Spliff began to produce emerging artists. Their first album was 1983 chart-topping international success Nena, Gabriele “Nena” Kerner’s debut album. It was a huge hit immediately, and Nena and the Nena Band toured countless European live stages and TVs and the album’s second track 99 Luftballons peaked #1 in music charts around the world which included Australia, Japan, Austria, Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Rakete describes Nena, “she could get anything across without explaining… That’s an ability that is very rare. I do not know anyone of that caliber”.

It was 1977 when Rakete took over a $300 square meters loft in the center of Berlin’s borough Kreuzberg. Fabrik Rakete was a thriving studio for photography, music as well as art was established. Within the two shooting areas that were created Rakete’s work was crucial to the growth of the rapidly growing German New Wave.

The album became gold both in Germany and France and sold more than 300.000 units in Germany by itself. Despite Hagen’s departure Rakete strengthened his ties with the group, and later continued to perform under the name of Spliff. The group (which included members of the rock theatre ensemble Lok Kreuzberg) and Rakete began writing an unassuming Rock Opera in the form of a radio program, featuring AFN famous Rik Delisle hosting the show, Aussie performer Alf Klimek “Klimax” as singer and with the inclusion to the show Dutch musician Josee Van Irsel. Spliff Radio Show Spliff Radio Show premiered live in Kant-Kino, May 2 the 2nd of May, 1980. The band toured the country and in 1982 they released their biggest hit album, 85555, which was named in honor of the album’s catalog number. Their following album, Herzlichen Gluckwunsch! came out in latter months of that year.

Meanwhile, Rakete had met the punk band Die Ärzte and put them in touch with CBS. Die Ärzte went on to be one of Germany’s most successful bands. This was the final chapter of Fabrik Rakete, which was finally closed off in 1987. Spliff went on producing music through a new venture. Rakete left the producing desk to fully focus on writing and photography full-time except in 1988-89, when he funded label ACT Music along with former president of Warner Bros. Europe Siegfried Loch and Ideal’s lead singer Annette Humpe. The label, which specializes in European Jazz, is active today.
