Jim Montgomery is one of the most popular and richest Ice Hockey Player who was born on June 30, 1969 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. James Peter Montgomery (born June 30 1969) is a Canadian professional coach of ice hockey and an ex-player. He was most recently the head coach for the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League (NHL). In his playing days, it was his turn to play in the NHL with the St. Louis Blues, Montreal Canadiens, Philadelphia Flyers, San Jose Sharks, and the Dallas Stars.
As of 2000, Montgomery became a player for the San Jose Sharks. Montgomery played for most of the season 2000-01 in the Kentucky Thoroughblades but also skated in 28 games for the Sharks. The following season, Montgomery was signed by Dallas Stars and played 9 games with the team for two seasons, with the majority of his time playing for the Utah Grizzlies. Montgomery later played for a year in Russia and one more year playing for the Missouri River Otters before retiring in 2005.
On May 4, 2018, Montgomery was named as the head coach of the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League (NHL). He led the Stars to their first playoff appearance in three years.
On December 10, 2019, the Stars fired Montgomery for “unprofessional conduct inconsistent with the core values and beliefs of the Dallas Stars and the National Hockey League.” At a press conference, general manager Jim Nill said the situation had come to light the previous weekend, and involved “a material act of unprofessionalism” egregious enough to demand Montgomery’s immediate firing. He did not offer specifics “out of respect for everyone involved,” only saying that it did not involve abuse of players or criminal conduct. Rick Bowness, who joined the team a month after Montgomery’s hiring in May 2018, was named interim coach.
It would take another four years before Montgomery returned in the NHL. He was a player for the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) in Germany during the 1996-97 season. This was and then two seasons playing for the Philadelphia Phantoms. The 1999-2000 season was the last time Montgomery was a part of the season with the Phantoms but spent the majority of the season playing for The Manitoba Moose.

Montgomery was not drafted from high school. Consequently, he was accepted into at the University of Maine and played for four seasons with the team receiving numerous awards and earning himself the status of one of the top potential players for hockey. He was notably named an All-Star three times (1991 1992, 1993) as well as the NCAA Tournament Championship MVP when the team led Maine to 42-1-2 record and also the 1993 National Championship. Three goals in the third period helped Maine’s Black Bears to a 5-4 victory against Lake Superior State in the final game. Montgomery ended his career with Maine in the top spot of the college’s leading scorer with 301 points, the scoreboard with 103 goals and an assist of 198. The number 19 he wore was taken away by Maine as one of the three players to have earned this distinction, with the other include Hobey Baker Award winners Scott Pellerin (#8) as well as Paul Kariya (#9).
After college, Montgomery was signed by the St. Louis Blues. For the 1993-94 season , he played in 67 games and recorded 20 points which were both NHL record highs for a career. After the season, the highly-rated Montgomery was dealt for the Montreal Canadiens for Guy Carbonneau. In 1994-95, however, the trade didn’t work out, and after only 5 games Montgomery was dismissed from the Canadiens. In the following year, he was signed by Philadelphia Flyers and skated in 8 regular season games as well as seven playoff games for the Flyers. Montgomery is believed to have invented the nickname for the top team comprised of John LeClair, Eric Lindros Mikael Renberg, and Eric Lindros as the “Legion of Doom”. The 1995-96 season was a time when Montgomery play just five games for the Flyers however, he did have an impressive year with The Flyers Minor League affiliate Hershey Bears of the AHL. Montgomery scored 105 points across the 78 games he played and was named as a member of the AHL Second All-Star Team.
Montgomery was an assistant coach for Notre Dame for the 2005–06 season. In 2006, Montgomery began a four-year stint as assistant coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. On April 12, 2010, he was named head coach of the United States Hockey League (USHL) expansion franchise Dubuque Fighting Saints. In the team’s first year, Montgomery guided the Fighting Saints to a 37–14–9 record and the 2010–11 USHL championship with a three games to one victory over the Green Bay Gamblers. He went on to win the Clark Cup again during the 2012–13 season. In 2013, Montgomery was signed by University of Denver as head coach of their Pioneers men’s ice hockey team and led them to a berth in the NCAA Tournament. He led the Pioneers to the 2016 Frozen Four. In 2017, his fourth year as the head coach of the Pioneers, he led them to the National Championship game after establishing them as the first-seeded team in the country for the majority of the season. In 2016–17 season he was named the Spencer Penrose national coach of the year.
