Jillian Schwartz (born September 19 1979) is an American- born female pole vaulter who has competed internationally for Israel. She competed for in the United States at the 2004 Summer Olympics and also competed in 5 consecutive World Championships in Athletics from 2003 until 2011. Her best result at international level was 4th in the 2004 IAAF World Indoor Championships.
The progress slowed in 2007 when she failed to get over 4.50 meters. But she still took third place in the USA Outdoors and also competed in the 2007 World Championships, where she was able to record her best season-long performance of 4.50 meters in qualifying. The year began with an incredible personal best indoors record in Jonesboro which saw her improve by 12 centimeters in clearance to 4.72 meters. She finished the third-place finisher in the USA Indoors, this time ahead of Jennifer Stuczynski. She came fourth at the 2009 USA Outdoor Championships, but was gifted a place at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics as the reigning US Champion Stuczynski withdrew due to injury. Schwartz vaulted 4.50 m at the championships in Berlin, just missing the qualifying mark by 5 cm.
In the 2011 season she cleared 4.50 m early in the season and won at the 2011 European Team Championships 3rd League, but she did not reach higher as the year progressed, finishing second at the national championships and being eliminated in qualifying at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics. She opened 2012 with a win at the U.S. Open Track and Field in January in a season’s best of 4.52 m. Again her early performances remained the best of the year, as she finished eleventh at both the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships and 2012 European Athletics Championships. She did, however, manage to win her second national title and make her Olympic debut for Israel at the 2012 London Games, competing in qualifying only. She retired from the sport after the Olympics.
Schwartz was not a participant in indoor competitions in 2005, but she did manage to finish in the top three spots during the USA Outdoors. She was one of three Americans competing in women’s pole vault event at the 2005 World Championships in Athletics (along with Dragila and Tracy O’Hara), she placed 2nd in qualifying round, but she was unable to replicate her performance in the final event and finished in 11th in the final round. She was named an assistant coach in the voluntary program of Columbia University’s Columbia University track and field team in the year 2008. She finished second in both the indoor and outdoor national championships in 2006, and increased her best by one centimeter to 4.61 meters within Jonesboro, Arkansas. In Evanston, Illinois, and Jewish She grew up within Lake Forest. She wanted to learn the pole vault at Lake Forest High School, but she was not permitted because the girls’ pole vaulting was only allowed in Illinois until 1997. She relocated to Arkansas to learn how to train in the sport. Schwartz went to Duke University and became the first woman to be awarded the Eastern College Athletic Conference title for the Duke Blue Devils in 1999. In the following year, she took home the Atlantic Coast Conference pole vault title, and placed third in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship. She competed in the United States Olympic Trials for the first time in the year 2000, however, she was unable to record an appropriate measurement of a height. When she finished her time at Duke at the beginning of 2001, she set school records for heights of 4.10 meters indoors and 4.32 meters outdoors, and also winning the ACC indoor and outdoor titles. She was second in the NCAA Outdoors and signed with Nike in the summer of 2001, and decided to go professional.
She finished second at the 2002 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships just behind Mary Sauer and improved her outdoor time to 4.50 meters. But she finished in to finish tenth in the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the same year. She finished 6th at the 2002 USA Indoors but rebounded with an overall second place at the national outdoor championships. She was able to earn a spot in the squad for 2003’s World Championships in Athletics and she finished eighth in the vault’s qualifying rounds. The 2004 season was to be her most successful year, as she finished second in the competition to Stacy Dragila at the USA Indoor Championships and was then finished 4th at 2004’s IAAF World Indoor Championships, vaulting her personal best of 4.60 meters. She clocked the same height outdoors and was second at the Prefontaine Classic and was runner-up to Dragila in the 2004 Olympic Trials which secured her first Olympic selection. She clocked 4.30 meters during the qualifying rounds for in the 2004 Athens Olympics but it was not enough to qualify for the final.
She competed at the NCAA Championships while at Duke University and gained All-America honours on three occasions. Although she never won at a USATF Championships event, she took the runner-up spot on three occasions at both the USA Outdoor and USA Indoor Championships. Her personal best mark is 4.72 m, set indoors in Jonesboro, Arkansas in 2008. After gaining Israeli citizenship in 2010, she set Israeli records of 4.60 m in the pole vault both outdoors and indoors and competed for Israel at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics and 2012 Summer Olympics.
