Jigme Gyatso is one of the most popular and richest Journalist who was born on May 8, 1972 in Kham, China. Jigme Gyatso (born 1961) is a Tibetan activist of the Tibetan Independence Organisation who, in 1996, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges of “leading a counter-revolutionary organisation” and “inciting splittism”. Two more years were given to him in the year 2004 after protests against his imprisonment. Many human rights organizations around the world have protested or fought on behalf of him, and Amnesty International designated him a prisoner of conscience.
Jigme Gyatso was later detained for a year and a month in the Gutsa PSB Detention Centre. He later claimed that the prison authorities tortured him during his time in prison by officials. In the initial six months, he endured lengthy interrogation sessions and was ordered to wear manacles on ankles and wrists, and was beat with batons. Amnesty International reported that in 1997 the man received “beaten so badly that he could barely walk afterwards”. “I heard that they took him out of the prison to a different place to torture and interrogate him very severely. The secret service policemen got drunk and put the beer bottles between the handcuffs and his back to hurt him even more.” His best friend said he has been exiled for a while.
In May 2004, Jigme Gyatso again shouted “Long live the Dalai Lama!”, resulting in a beating with electric batons. He was charged with “inciting separatism” and given an additional two years to his sentence, pushing his scheduled release back to March 2013. He was later transferred again, this time to Chushul Prison on the outskirts of Lhasa.
On 27 November 2005, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Manfred Nowak visited Jigme Gyatso in prison; in his official report, Nowak recommended that the prisoner be released. Jigme Gyatso was reportedly subject to beatings and solitary confinement as a result of the meeting.
He was moved into Drapchi Prison in April 1997. In May of that year, he joined with other prisoners to protest inside prison, when Chinese prison officials attempted to make Tibetan prisoners to raise the Chinese national flag and sing the Chinese national anthem. Nine prisoners were killed by prison authorities as a revenge, and Jigme Gyatso was beaten again.

Jigme Gyatso comes Jigme Gyatso is from Kersul in Amdo located in Gansu province in Tibet. The year 1985 saw him went to India to be a part of a religious initiation after which he returning to Tibet to be a monk in the year following. The following year, he became engaged with an active part of the Tibetan independence movement and served as the head of the secret youth group “Tibetan Independence Organisation” in 1991. He was involved in 1992 when he was a part of the team in organizing a pro-independence demonstration in Lhasa in which a number of participants were detained from police from the Chinese police department (PSB). Following the event, PSB officials put Jigme Gyatso under observation.
On March 30, 1996, around six o’clock, Jigme Gyatso was arrested at the restaurant in Lhasa run by a fellow members of the Tibetan Independence Organization who was as well detained along together with the other members of the Tibetan Independence Organization. Jigme Gyatso then was arrested on charges relating to 1992’s Lhasa protest, including inciting violence and threatening national security by creating an illegal group. At his trial, authorities described him as a “counter-revolutionary ringleader”. On November 25, 1996 the Lhasa Municipal Intermediate People’s Court sentenced him to 15 years’ jail and five years’ deprivation of rights to vote.
The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention reviewed Jigme Gyatso’s case in 1999, and issued a ruling that his detention was “arbitrary” and unlawful. Amnesty International has campaigned repeatedly for Jigme Gyatso’s release, and designated him a “prisoner of conscience”, “detained solely for peacefully exercising his rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly”. The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy has issued warnings over his health and called for his release on compassionate grounds. In 2009, the World Organization Against Torture called for a letter-writing campaign on Jigme Gyatso’s behalf in light of the evidence that he had been mistreated by prison authorities. The International Campaign for Tibet has also circulated petitions calling for “the release of Jigme Gyatso, so that he may seek medical attention and be freed from unjust political persecution”.
