Steffens was born in San Francisco, California to Peggy Schnugg and Carlos Steffens. Her father, who was a born in Puerto Rico, became interested in water polo after watching the game as a kid playing in Puerto Rico. He was a player for Puerto Rico in three Pan American Games. Her father left the island to join the water polo team at University of California, Berkeley where he was three-time All-American and led his team of California Golden Bears to the 1977 NCAA championship. He won the championship in 1979. was named the most popular player in the PAC-10 in water soccer.
Steffens redshirted her 2008 season to play alongside her U.S. national team while they were preparing to compete in the 2008 Olympics. Steffens returned back to Stanford in 2009 and scored 12 goals and was selected to the All-MPSF team and the All-National Collegiate first team. As a senior she scored 17 goals, which helped Stanford get towards finals in the NCAA final.
Steffens had five points at her 2007. Pan American Games, as the U.S. finished first. In the 2008 Summer Olympics Steffens scored 5 goals to help to help the U.S. win the silver medal. She was also included on the Olympic Media All-Star team. In 2009, at the FINA World Championships she scored four goals which was the reason she scored four goals, and the U.S. won gold.

Jessica Marie Steffens (born April 7th 1987) is an American water polo player. She was on the United States national teams that took home a silver medal in the Olympic Games in 2008 Summer Olympics and an Olympic silver medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics. She also played for Stanford University.
Steffens began her journey at Stanford University as a freshman in 2006. Her goals totaled 15 in that season, when the Cardinal placed third in the NCAA championships. In the next year the team scored 35 goals and Stanford was ranked second in the nation.
Steffens did not compete in 2010 following shoulder surgery. She returned in 2011 and helped the U.S. win the gold medal at the Pan American Games. She then won a gold medal with the U.S. at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
