Jerry Michael Dunn (born May 6 1953) is an American college basketball coach who was until recent the coach of Tuskegee. Dunn was a former men’s basketball coach assistant in the University of Michigan, who was a part-time Assistant Head Coach. He had previously held the job in West Virginia University, but took over as the head coach John Beilein to Michigan after the 2006-2007 season. Dunn was the head coach for the Penn State Nittany Lions basketball from 1995 to 2003.

After 13 years as an assistant to Penn State head coach Bruce Parkhill, Dunn served as the head coach at Penn State from 1995 to 2003. Coach Dunn was the coach who led the team to their initial Top Ten ranking and the 1996 NCAA Tournament. The year 2001 was the time he guided Penn State to the Big Ten Tournament semi-finals, and ultimately to an overall 7 place at the NCAA Tournament; Penn State beat the number 2 seeds, North Carolina, to make it towards the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in more than 50 years. Coach Dunn had 100 wins and 50 wins quicker that any head coach of men’s basketball during Penn State history.

On May 15, 2019, Tuskegee announced that it would not be renewing Dunn’s contract.

Dunn is an alumni of George Mason University, where Dunn was a player as well as an the assistant coach for the year 1977 until 1983.

Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, Dunn relocated into Washington, D. C. with his family at the age of 13 and later on to Fort Dix, New Jersey three years later, when his stepfather, who was a United States Army officer, was stationed to Fort Dix, New Jersey. Dunn completed his studies at Pemberton Township High School in 1971.

Dunn then relocated into Casper, Wyoming to attend Casper Junior College and played one season of basketball during the 1973-74 basketball season before tendonitis brought an end to his basketball career. After finishing the associate’s degree Dunn went back home to Washington, D. C. to work for the federal government. Dunn was then accepted into the nearby George Mason University in 1978 and was awarded an undergraduate degree in physical and health and a concentration in the field of history.

Dunn served as an assistant coach on John Beilein’s staff at West Virginia from 2003 to 2007. He followed Beilein to the University of Michigan when Beilein was hired as the Michigan head basketball coach. On December 29, 2009, Dunn took an indefinite leave of absence from Michigan due to personal matters.
