Jason Shay (born February 15 1973) is an American basketball coach for the men’s college team. coach of the East Tennessee State Buccaneers. Prior to his appointment at Johnson City, Shay held as an assistant coach at the University of North Dakota, Northwest Florida State College, University of Tennessee, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as well as Mercyhurst (Pa.) College. Through those stints, Shay had a streak of coaching teams to nine consecutive postseason appearances on level Division I level, including Tennessee’s first ever journey to the Elite Eight in 2010 and an appearance in the Sweet 16 run at Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2005.

On the 6th of May in 2020, Shay was appointed as the head coach for the East Tennessee State men’s basketball team. Shay is the 17th coach of the team in its 100-year history. He was appointed after the former Coach Steve Forbes left for Wake Forest.

Shay was a five-year veteran serving as ETSU Buccaneers’ assistant coach during which time ETSU had its overall records of 130-43. The 130 wins are the highest in a five-year span in the history of the program. They also ended up being ranked 15th in the nation since the beginning of the season in 2015-16. The Buccaneers also took home 2 Southern Conference regular season championships and the two SoCon Tournament championships and made two NCAA Tournament appearances. In the last season the Buccaneers recorded a record for their program by winning 30 games, becoming only the fourth club that has ever won 30 games in SoCon history to achieve the record. In the 2017-18 season they Blue and Gold tied the record of the school with 16 consecutive games, an streak that was the longest streak in the nation at one point in the season. He was a key player in helping ETSU achieve a school record of 30-4 record in the 2019-20 season.

Shay is a resident of Galesburg, Illinois, Shay was a walk-on student at the University of Iowa for Dr. Tom Davis where he received an undergraduate degree in health-related promotion in the year 1995. Shay later earned an master’s qualification at Western Illinois University in 1998.

UT had more than 25 victories in a season during his tenure as a coach, which included winning the No. 1 spot at the start of the history of the program in the year 2008. After six years in the position of assistant coach for University of Tennessee, he was a part-time coach playing at Northwest Florida State College in Niceville, Florida. In his time in Northwest Florida, the Raiders were 62-6 while also winning successive Panhandle Conference Championships and back-to-back appearances in the NJCAA Division I National Championship game. He was also an assistant coach at the University of North Dakota from 2013 until the year 2015.
