Kaufusi was born in 1979 on the 27th of February, to Petelo Kaufusi and Eveline Kaufusi who were both Tongan immigrants who arrived in his home in United States in 1972. He played football in high school in East High School in Salt Lake City and his team took home the Utah 4A state title in 1996, while Kaufusi had just turned a year old. Kaufusi was a defensive lineman and tight end at East High; in his senior season, he took 17 passes and gained 327 yards while playing tightend and recorded 16 sacks while defensive ends.

The year 2009 was the time that Kaufusi was administrator at University of Utah, his school of choice. He assisted with cornerbacks who contributed to an offensive defense that was 14th across the country during the season. Kaufusi was later a coach in Weber State as the defensive ends coach during the 2011 and 2010 seasons. The years 2012 and 2013 the coach worked as an assistant to the defensive graduate at BYU in which he was coach’s advisor on academics.

In 2017, Kaufusi went to Nevada, where he served as the defensive line coach for the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Kaufusi coached Malik Reed and Korey Rush, who earned first-team All-Mountain West honors in the 2017 and 2018 seasons, respectively.

In 2019, Kaufusi was hired as the outside linebackers coach at UCLA. One of the linebackers of Kaufusi’s unit, Josh Woods, posted career highs in tackles, tackles for loss, and quarterback sacks. UCLA increased its total number of quarterback sacks from 11 in the 2018 season to 26 in 2019.

Kaufusi was a coaching professional since the year 2004 when he started a four-year tenure working as an assistant coach Cottonwood High School in Murray, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City. The coach was a defensive line coach at Cottonwood as well as being responsible for academics and assisted with strength and conditioning.

The year 1997 was when Kaufusi enrolled to play football in college at Utah before taking off on 3 year LDS Church mission to Panama. The first year of Kaufusi’s playing in the Utes was in 2000 that he was a starter in nine games. He was also voted Co-Mountain West Freshman Of The Year. Both in 2001 and 2002, Kaufusi earned first-team All-Mountain West recognition. Kaufusi began in the season of 2003 as an All-America candidate, but he suffered an injury that kept him out for the entire season.

Kaufusi returned to Weber State in 2014, and he went on to coach the defensive ends there for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. After Weber State led the Big Sky Conference in total defense in the 2015 season, Kaufusi was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2016. With Kaufusi as defensive coordinator, Weber State reached the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs for the first time since 2009. That same season, Weber State ranked first in the Big Sky Conference in passing defense, allowing a mere 193.5 yards per game, and five of the Wildcats’ defensive players earned all-conference honors.
