After his Centennial Cup-winning year during his time at Notre Dame, Herter moved to the University of North Dakota to play in the NCAA hockey team, the North Dakota Fighting Sioux of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). At the end of his first season Herter was named the best player in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau. Herter ended his first year with 24 points and eight goals over 41 games. His assists of 24 as well as 32 goals set new single-season freshman points and assist records for the state of North Dakota, although his point record was later broken. The following year, Herter entered the 1989 NHL Entry Draft as the second overall in the field of North American skaters, dropping one spot in the NHL Central Scouting Bureau’s final draft rankings. On the 17th of June, 1989, he received a draft pick eighth overall, by The Vancouver Canucks.

In July and August 1990, Herter was a member of the Canadian team at the 1990 Goodwill Games in Seattle, Washington. After finishing the round robin with a 3–0 record, the Canadian team lost 5–4 in a shootout against the United States in their semifinal game and 6–1 to Sweden in the bronze medal game to finish the tournament in fourth place.

Despite being drafted, Herter returned to North Dakota for his sophomore season. He also had the option of joining the Saskatoon Blades, the team that held Western Hockey League rights, but chose North Dakota because the Canucks had five other prospects playing there. Throughout the season, Herter suffered from chronic groin injuries and a knee sprain which limited him to only 38 games. However, despite his injury-plagued season, Herter scored eleven goals and 39 assists. Nine of his eleven goals were scored on the powerplay, a North Dakota single-season record for a defenceman. Further, his 39 assists and fifty points are both fourth all-time for a defenceman in a single season with the Fighting Sioux. For his performance, Herter was named to the WCHA Second All-Star Team as well as the All-Tournament Team at the 1990 WCHA Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament.

Herter represented Canada at one International Ice Hockey Federation- sanctioned event. The year was July, 1989. He was one among 32 athletes who were invited to attend the Canadian national junior team’s summer camp for evaluation at Kitchener, Ontario for the 1990 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. In December of that same year, Herter was invited to the national junior team’s training camp. After that, He was added as the last Canadian team for the tournament , despite finishing the training camp suffering from an injury to the groin. Herter completed the tournament with just one assistance in seven of the games, as Canada recorded a 5-1-0 record in order to claim an Olympic gold medal.

Jason Herter (born October 2 in 1970) is a Canadian retired professional defenceman in ice hockey. He recently quit his role as an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Herter played high school midget soccer in Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Wilcox, Saskatchewan aka: Notre Dame Hounds of the Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA). In the 1986-87 season, he was on the Hounds midget team, which placed second in the 1987 Air Canada Cup in Gloucester, Ontario. His high school hockey teammates included the future NHLers Scott Pellerin (1992 Hobey Baker winner as the top athlete in NCAA college hockey) Rod Brind’amour, Jeff Batters and Joby Messier Herter was a part of his Hounds for the following season after the team switched between minor and Junior A, and then joined with the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). In the first season of the team, Herter scored 38 points in 54 games when the Hounds took home the Credential Cup as SJHL champions. In addition to winning the Anavet Cup and Abbott Cup and the Abbott Cup, the Hounds made it to the 1998 Centennial Cup in Pembroke, Ontario. In the tournament, Herter scored two points in five tournament games, including one goal in a victory of 9-7 against the Thunder Bay Flyers. the Hounds beat their opponents the Halifax Lions 3-2 in the final game to take home their national junior A championship.

Drafted in the first round, eighth overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, Herter played one National Hockey League (NHL) game, scoring an assist in a game with the New York Islanders during the 1995–96 season.
