Firth made his debut as a professional player for his Red Wings’ American Hockey League farm team called known as the Adirondack Red Wings, in the spring of 1992. He played two games with no scoring. However, despite his junior success however, Firth was not a part of the team. Red Wings declined to sign Firth to an agreement during the 1994 season and he opted to sign as an independent player to Ottawa Senators. Ottawa Senators. He did not play in Ottawa but instead played in the mid-to minor leagues for a decade afterward.

The third season of Firth’s in Kitchener was a success, as he led his team in scoring 112 points and finished in the sixth spot in league scoring, following which he was picked in the tenth selection of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings. He completed his final season as a junior as an overager with the North Bay Centennials. Despite injuries that forced him to miss thirteen games Firth was second on scoring as a team, scoring the score of 97 points. He also scored 25 points during the playoffs, as the Centennials made it to their first OHL Finals.

In the United Hockey League, Firth scored 357 goals and 732 assists for 1089 points, the highest career totals ever recorded in the UHL for both assists and points.
