Pesonen decided to return to Europe after one season in North America and signed with Ak Bars Kazan, a Russian club, of the Kontinental Hockey League, on 4 August 2009. After two seasons in Kazan, he signed a try-out agreement with the Winnipeg Jets (NHL), on August 11. After failing to receive an extended offer, he was released by the Jets on October 2.

The Pittsburgh Penguins signed Pesonen to an one-year contract on July 7, 2008. After 3 preseason games in which he tallied 1 goal and 1 assist, Pesonen was sent to the Penguins’ AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, on 8 October 2008. Pesonen showed his adaptability to North American hockey style by scoring 9 points in his seven first games. He also scored two goals and received seven assists. Pesonen was recalled on 31 October by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He made his NHL debut against the St. Louis Blues on 1 November. Pesonen was only able to stay seven games with the Penguins, but he was then returned to the AHL. On 16 March, Pesonen set a new record for points in a single season for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Baby Penguins, passing up Toby Petersen’s 67-point season of 2000-01. Pesonen was fourth in the AHL scoring with 82 points and had the most AHL-recorded Finn point total.

Pesonen started his hockey career in 1998 with Hokki, playing in Finland’s second-highest division, the Mestis.

From 2001-02 to 2003-08, he played for Karpat in Finland’s top division, SM- liiga. He returned to Hokki in 2002-03 after his first season playing for Karpat. In 2003-04, he returned to Karpat and was awarded the SM-liiga rookie of the year award. This helped Karpat win their first Finnish championship since 1981. Pesonen won four Finnish championships during his five seasons with Karpat, 2003-08. This was in addition to the 2005, 2007 and 2008 titles. In 2007, he won the Jari Kurri Trophy, which is an annual award for the playoff MVP. His 2007-08 season was his best, when he led SM-liiga’s goals, points and plus-minus. He also won the Veli-Pekka Ketola and Aarne Honkavaara trophies for his efforts. He scored 34 goals and had 44 assists, totaling 78 points over 56 games.

On August 24, 2016, Pesonen signed a seven-week contract with HC Ambrì-Piotta of the National League A (NLA) as an injury replacement for Adam Hall.
