She is a developmental biologist who is well-known for her contributions to understanding the role of genes during embryo development. She is a leader in the field of developmental biology. Her current research interests are in stem cells, molecular genes, and developmental biology. She uses cell and genetic manipulation techniques to examine how genes affect the normal and abnormal development early mouse embryos. Rossant has uncovered information about embryo development, the establishment of multiple types stem cells, and the mechanisms that regulate development. Her work led to the discovery and use of the trophoblast, a stem cell that can be used to help explain congenital anomalies such as those in the placenta, blood vessels, or heart.

She is currently the President and Science Director at Gairdner, a senior scientist in the Developmental & Stem Cell Biology Program, the chief of research at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) Research Institute in Toronto, a university professor at the University of Toronto in the departments of Molecular Genetics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics, deputy scientific director of the Canadian Stem Cell Network, and the senior editor of the journal eLife. She was president of the International Society for Stem Cell Research in 2013.

Rossant has called attention to the immense contributions of female scientists, and was one of five women to win the 2018 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award. In response to the award, Rossant stated, “I hope to use this opportunity to encourage more girls globally to take up careers in science, math, engineering and medicine. The future is theirs to grasp.”

Rossant received the Ross G. Harrison Medal of the International Society of Developmental Biologists at the 17th International Congress of Developmental Biology in Cancun, Mexico in 2013. This lifetime achievement award is given once every four years and recognizes Rossant’s contributions to understanding embryogenesis and stem cell origin in human embryos. It also highlights Rossant’s contribution in developing the technique for introducing targeted mutations to mouse embryos.
